18 fashion and beauty brands who are donating to anti-racism organizations

Ongoing protests across the United States and Canada are demanding justice for the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Taylor McDade and Korchinski-Paquet — as well as an end to police brutality.

Many brands within the fashion and beauty world have established themselves as allies to the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement by announcing sizeable donations not only to BLM, but other anti-racism groups such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) the NAACP Legal Defense and Eduation Fund, Reclaim the Block and The Bail Project just to name a few.

Aside from self-education and reflection, putting allyship into action by supporting and highlighting Black voices, practicing conscious consumerism and supporting Black-owned and allied businesses is a small, but significant way to affect change.

GOLDIE Tees

Goldie Tees has pledged to donate 10% of all sales until June 12 to the NAACP and Black Lives Matter.

MOTHER

The Los Angeles-based brand has donated $10,000 to the NAACP as well as an additional $10,000 to Black Lives Matter. MOTHER also shared resources for BLM supporters to take action via Instagram.

Brooklinen

The home-goods and loungewear brand has donated to anti-racism organizations and has pledged to use their platform to encourage social change and equality.

Glossier

Glossier was one of the first beauty brands to publicly establish themselves as allies to the Black Lives Matter movement and announce a $500,000 donation to be shared among Black Lives Matter, The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the Equal Justice Initiative, the Marsha P. Johnson Institute and We The Protesters. The brand also committed an additional $500,000 to Black-owned beauty businesses.

Fabletics

The athletics brand, co-founded by actress Kate Hudson, has announced a $50,000 donation to the ACLU. Fabletics also participated in #BlackoutTuesday and issued a statement of solidarity with the Black community by shutting down their business and online stores globally for 24 hours.

Fenty Beauty

Rihanna’s fashion and beauty brands Fenty, Fenty Beauty and SavagexFenty announced a global shutdown on June 2 in honour of #BlackOutTuesday. The brands also announced via the SavagexFenty Instagram page that it would be making a donation via the star’s charity organization, the Clara Lionel Foundation, to Black Lives Matter Greater NY and The Bail Project.

Lululemon

The Canadian-based athleisure brand announced a $100,000 donation to the Minnesota Freedom Fund and pledged their commitment to increase their “investment in education, behaviour change and diverse representation,” utilize their platform and following to promote message of equality and educate themselves on allyship.

NYX Cosmetics

NYX Cosmetics announced a donation to the Minnesota Freedom Fund and Black Lives Matter while pledging to continue to support and feature people of colour, highlight underrepresented voices and “standardize inclusive shade ranges” product-wise.

Anastasia Beverly Hills

The makeup brand announced a pledge of $1 million towards anti-racism efforts, beginning with a $100,000 donation across Black Lives Matter, The Innocence Project, the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, Black Visions Collective and The Marshall Project.

H&M

H&M announced it would be making a $500,000 donation to the NAACP, Color of Change and the ACLU as a symbol of their allyship with the Black community. The Swedish brand told followers, “We’ve learned the hard way how much work we still must do to live by the values we believe in. We’re committed to using our voice and influence to do our part and stand up against racism and discrimination.”


Sunday Riley

Sunday Riley, the founder of the skincare brand of the same name, announced a $50,000 donation to the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. Riley noted that both she and George Floyd, who was killed by a police officer, both went to the same high school in Houston, Tx at different times. Riley wrote, “ We had entirely different lives, different opportunities, and faced different challenges.  Had we both been in the exact same situation, at the exact same moment, I think it would have ended differently for me. Actually, I know it would have. That reality pierces me to my core.”

FARMACY

The Vegan skincare and beauty brand took to social media to condemn racial injustice and announce a donation of $10,000 to Color Of Change.


Dermalogica

Skincare brand Dermalogica announced a donation to the NAACP for an undisclosed sum on #BlackoutTuesday. The brand also recognized their previous failures to take a public stance against social inequality but vowed to “fight the widening gap of inequality by educating ourselves and each other, by working with community leaders to help guide us.”

Stella McCartney

The UK based fashion brand has announced a donation to The NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund in an effort to unite against systemic racism.

Deciem

Deciem, the parent company behind The Ordinary skin and haircare products, announced a donation of $100,000 to be shared across Black Lives Matter and the NAACP Legal Defence and Education Fund, while committing their brand to “amplify” underrepresented voices, and requested followers submit video messages that will be shared to Instagram.

Charlotte Tilbury

Charlotte Tilbury announced a donation to the ACLU, Black Lives Matter and NAACP for an undisclosed amount and pledged to continue to support the causes in the future.

Hourglass

Hourglass cosmetics announced a $100,000 donation to be shared equally between the NAACP, Black Lives Matter, Marsha P. Johnson Institute, Loveland Foundation and the Thurgood Marshall College Found. The brand called the donation a “first step” in their commitment to “listening, learning and working towards systemic change.”

For Love & Lemons

California-based clothing brand For Love & Lemons pledged to donate all web sales made from May 30 to June 2 to Black Lives Matter, the Bail Project, the ACLU and the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. The brand announced the amount of proceeds to be donated and shared between the organizations totalled approximately $136,200. In a statement, the brand’s founders Laura Hall and Gillian Mahin wrote, “We as a company must own up to our responsibilities to make a change, to stand for what is right. We are committed to do so, to do more, to be better.”
