A Filmmaker’s Laid-Back Malibu Home Sits Right on the Sand. It Can Be Yours for $20 Million.

Film fanatics might recall the lurking terrors in 1997’s Campfire Tales or the budding romance of two college grads in 2004’s Perfect Opposites. Both titles were written and directed by Matthew Cooper, whose eye for visuals spills over into his housing taste. And that’s considering the serene Malibu digs he just brought to market for nearly $20 million.

Named the Cactus House because of the gigantic cactus that looms over the back of the house, the residence was built in 1947 and renovated in 2021. Its relaxed design by architect Charles Kanner fuses the classic codes of a California mid-century beach house with the warmth of a Mediterranean abode and a trendy palette of neutral hues and organic materials. The four-bedroom pad sits along the Pacific Coast Highway with 3,861 square feet of living space. In addition to its three full baths, the property also offers 58 feet of beach frontage that overlooks the Pacific Ocean.

The open-plan great room spills out a trio of French doors to an ocean-facing deck.

Wood floors and cabinetry add warmth to the main living area, set beneath a vaulted ceiling with a large skylight. Lounge space, a formal dining space, and a wet bar are all accessible here, but three large French doors also open out to the large teak deck overlooking Escondido Beach and a gated terracotta courtyard below, with views to Point Dume.

In the gourmet kitchen, the countertop waterfalls over the ends of an island with a built-in stovetop and breakfast bar seating. Plush sitting and entertainment spaces come into focus as you trail the abode, including a home gym and a spacious family room with a ping-pong table before reaching the primary suite. The bedroom’s soaring ceiling and open plan keep it filled with natural light, alongside the spa-like ensuite with a soaking tub set beneath a greenhouse window that looks into a walled courtyard teeming with tropical greenery.

Additional perks to shacking up at the Malibu abode include access to the private beach staircase that leads to Geoffrey’s, one of the area’s dining hotspots. Its close proximity to Escondido Falls for hikes and Cross Creek for shopping is also worth noting. But for some, having local celebrity neighbors like Beyoncé and Jay-Z could be the hammer in the nail. Sandeep Dhariwal of Sotheby’s International Realty – Beverly Hills Brokerage holds the listing.
