We Finally Know the Name of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Dog

Naturally, it has a special meaning.

The royal news we’ve all been waiting for is finally here … Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Labrador rescue, whom they adopted shortly after their wedding in 2018, has a name (and it’s not the previously reported Oz).

According to Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand’s new book, Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family, the pup goes by Pula.

And, like many things pertaining to Meghan and Harry’s relationship, the name takes inspiration from the couple’s beloved Botswana. “Pula” is both Botswana’s currency and the word for rain in one of the country’s national languages, Setswana. According to People, rain is so infrequent in Botswana that it’s considered a blessing (I apologize if this sentence triggers the chorus of Toto’s “Africa” on repeat in your mind).

The couple first visited Botswana together back in 2016, before their relationship was public knowledge. They returned the following year to assist Elephants Without Borders.

Pula is, of course, not Meghan and Harry’s only canine cohort. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are also proud dog parents to Guy, the Beagle Meghan adopted ahead of becoming a royal. Meghan and Harry are also proud parents to an actual child, 15-month-old Archie, who is reportedly "best friends with his dogs.”
