That’s because the ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ actress chose to forgo the typical towering red carpet heels, for some custom fluoro, yellow Birkenstocks.
Offering a splash of neon colour, and in a nod to the actress’ famously off-beat style, the star’s Birkenstocks were just visible under her raspberry pink gown.
In a couture/comfort mesh-up the 2018 Oscar winner, who almost had her Best Actress gong stolen, elevated last year’s summer sandal look to high fashion status.
And Twitter was so down for it.

It isn’t the first time Birkenstocks have had a high fashion moment recently.
During Valentino’s Fall/Winter 2019-20 men’s Fashion Week show in Paris earlier this year, male models strutted the catwalk clad in svelte suits, sunglasses and men’s Birkenstock sandals on their feet.
“I chose to make this collaboration with Birkenstock for the same reason people choose Birkenstock every day,” Piccioli said in a press release.
“No matter what you wear, who you are, no matter your gender or social background, no matter your age, your style, no matter if you care about fashion or if you do not, Birkenstock has its own universal language.
“I loved the idea of approaching the DNA of our Maison, represented by the individual and intimate world of Couture with something that it is so free and adaptable. To me, this is the definition of inclusivity.”
No doubt McDormand’s moment will kick off a stampede for the trusty sandals, so keep your eyes peeled for the Valentino and Birkenstock sandals to be released on Valentino.com and select Birkenstock and Valentino boutiques worldwide later this year.
