'Girl in the Picture': Where is Franklin Floyd Now?
If you’re a real true crime junkie you know that Netflix has been on top of their true crime game recently. With tons of documentaries like Our Father, Conversations With a Killer, Keep Sweet Pray and Obey, and Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich, many of which are Netflix originals, Netflix is quickly becoming the go-to streaming service for all the best true crime. That said, it is no surprise that their latest drop, Girl in the Picture, almost immediately claimed a spot amongst Netflix's current top 10 trending movies.
If you’ve seen Girl in the Picture, you probably have some unanswered questions, and of course need to know every single detail. We've done some extra digging for you to help fill in the gaps and hopefully help you sleep better at night after witnessing the horrifying events that unfolded in the documentary.
Beginning with the death of Tonya (who we later find out is actually named Suzanne), the documentary highlights the horrific crimes of Franklin Delano Floyd. Suzanne Sevakis was kidnapped by Floyd, her recently incarcerated mother's husband, in 1975. Floyd raised Suzanne as if she was his daughter while subjecting her to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. He later forces Suzanne to marry him and changes her name to Tonya Hughes.
Suzanne is killed at the age of 20, which Floyd claims was the result of a hit and run accident. No one was ever charged for her death although Floyd was the primary suspect in the investigation. After her death, Floyd abducts Suzanne's son Michael Hughes from his elementary school and later murders him. In the process of being arrested for Michael's kidnapping, police discovered that Hughes was involved in the 1989 murder of 18-year-old Cheryl Commesso, a colleague and friend of Suzanne.
In 2002, Floyd was convicted of the murder of Cheryl Commesso and the kidnapping of Michael Hughes and sentenced to death. Eleven years after his initial conviction Floyd admitted to murdering Michael, but never admitted to murdering Suzanne. This is where the documentary ends, but now we are all dying to know what ever happened to Franklin Floyd?
Today, Floyd is 79-years old and is on death row at Union correctional Institution in Raiford, Florida. However, there is no execution date set for Floyd, and many people believe he will die of natural causes before he is executed. Since Floyd's conviction, 48 death row inmates have been executed in Florida, but there have been no executions in Florida since 2019 likely due to the pandemic.
Hopefully now you can sleep at night knowing that Floyd will never be released from prison. However, the heartbreaking news is that Suzanne Sevakis never received the justice she deserved for her untimely death, and we may never know what really happened to her.
If you haven't already go watch Girl in the Picture on Netflix to find out even more detail about the case. Happy streaming true crime lovers!
