The 'Grecian tiara' trend is a fresh twist on the half-up hairstyle
With awards season now in full swing, we're once again turning to the red carpet to inspect its generous offering of star-studded beauty inspiration. While decadent Hollywood waves and retro bobs are staging a revival, actress Margaret Qualley made a convincing case for polished mythical references at the 30th Annual Critics Choice Awards this weekend. The most elegant hairstyle of the evening? The glossy and whimsical 'Grecian tiara'.
The 'Grecian tiara', made modern
"I was taking inspiration from the old Hollywood era of timeless elegance", says celebrity hairstylist, Anna Cofone. "The graphic shape included a slicked back ponytail with the addition of rope twists in contrasting colours to create a striking red carpet moment".
Qualley's half-up style had all of the romantic aesthetic of Greek mythology, but with modern shine and not a flyaway in sight. The choice of rope braids wound around the crown of the head gave the look a regal feel and served as an accessory in itself, with the finished ensemble being more polished than the traditional milkmaid braid. Swishy volume and length added to the opulence.
How to master a romantic updo
To create the timeless look, Cofone began by prepping Qualley's hair using Authentic Beauty Concept Glow Spray Serum, to smooth texture. She then used a hair extension ponytail (24inch) and created soft waves using a curling tool. Authentic Beauty Concept Pliable Paste was applied to slick back hair around the crown and control flyaways, before Cofone attached and secured the rope twist extensions. Cofone added some final waves, tousling lengths using Authentic Beauty Concept Airy Texture Spray, before setting hair in place with Working Hairspray.
Fellow actress Joey King adopted a similarly ethereal look for the event, showcasing a crown of more delicate, textured twists, courtesy of hairstylist Rena Calhoun. A middle parting and soft cascading waves offered a more subtle take on the night's Rapunzel references.
Elsewhere, at the 77th Annual Directors Guild Awards held on Saturday, actress Ayo Edebiri showcased an even more understated version of the twisted, romantic updo, with a wispy, ultra fine central braid adding dainty but luxe detail to her chocolate-hued silk dress.
Created by hairstylist Jacob Aaron, it perfectly treads the line between 'fairytale' and 'refined'; the half-up do has a new lease of life, even if its origins are age old.
