From Town & Country

Helena Bonham Carter has lived a very different life than Princess Margaret, her character on The Crown, led. But there is at least one plight the actress shares with royals, past and present: the harsh spotlight that comes with celebrity.

Bonham Carter stopped by Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen recently, and was asked if she had any thoughts about Meghan Markle's current battle with the press. (The Duchess recently filed a lawsuit against the Mail on Sunday for publishing her private letter to her father; her husband Prince Harry condemned the media's "relentless propaganda," which he said was often "knowingly false and malicious," in a public message announcing the legal action.)

The actress has found a way to cope, and hopes Meghan can do the same. "I don’t pay attention to it, and I wish she wouldn’t have to," Bonham Carter said. "I feel like there’s just so much. It’s just all too much. It must be really hard for her not to, but all I’d say to her is, as soon as you become well known and in the public domain, you have to kind of accept that possibly... All that people think about you and write about you, and whatever, that's about them. That's not really about her."

She added, "The most important or useful thing that someone told me is [don’t be] putting your self esteem in the hands of strangers."

Bonham Carter explained that the public treated Princess Margaret similarly, which she also finds upsetting. "That's the same with Margaret. It's really interesting playing her. That so many people keep giving me an opinion about every single person in the royal [family]," the actress said. "You’re like, 'You didn’t meet them!' Everyone feels that they’re an authority. And of course, unless you’ve met the person, don’t even voice an opinion."
