Cassidy Meyers met her husband, Jared, when they were children living in the same small town. They attended their senior prom together in 2014 and began dating shortly thereafter. They married in 2019, and in April 2023, the pair welcomed their son, Griffin.

On March 7, 2024, less than one year after the birth of their son, Jared died of hypertensive cardiovascular disease, in combination with myocardial bridging, a heart defect that he was born with but unaware he had.

One night after her husband’s death, while rocking Griffin to sleep with a song, Cassidy had an idea: “How cool would it be if instead of singing this [lullaby] every night, I sang something meaningful to him instead that taught him about his daddy?”

She immediately thought of her mother-in-law, asking Rebecca Funk to make a custom lullaby for Griffin. “I gave her some specific qualities that Griffin inherited from Jared and memories I liked of them together,” Cassidy tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I asked her to include those items, and match that same tune that I already knew he liked falling asleep to.”

Within hours, Rebecca returned with “a long, beautiful lullaby that had incorporated everything I asked for and more," Cassidy says. The grieving young mother then posted the song to TikTok, in a video that has since gone viral, viewed more than 1.2 million times.

In a TikTok video posted on Dec. 1, Cassidy sits with her son and mother-in-law, who sings the lullaby written in honor of Jared. Cassidy tells PEOPLE, “Rebecca has always been good at making up lullabies on a whim. She did it for her kids when they were little, and I watched her do it with my son too.”

The song, set to the tune of Griffin’s favorite song, “The Ants Go Marching,” begins, “My name is Griffin Meyers, hurrah, hurrah. And I am feeling tired, hurrah, hurrah. So mommy sings sweet songs to me and tells me stories about daddy, so I can always have memories. Good memories.”

“She says when daddy held me he was filled with love,” they sing. “She says that daddy watches me from up above.”

In the video of the trio, Griffin relaxes in his mom’s arms as she and his grandma sing, “They say that if I wake with fright, just look to heaven and feel his light, and know he keeps me safe through the night.”

Rebecca included details about Jared, letting Griffin know he has the color of his eyes. “[Mommy] says she sees him when I grin and knows I’ll grow up strong like him,” the lyrics continue.

The lyrics end: “Within our hearts, you’re always alive, hurrah, hurrah. As long as I live your legacy will never die. I am so lucky to be your boy, I promise to always bring you joy. Oh, daddy, I’m looking up to you. Always up to you.”

Cassidy says that Rebecca "totally took the idea and embraced it. I think it was healing for her in a way to do something in honor of her son that she knew would help him be raised to know him.”

“My mother-in-law is amazing,” Cassidy continues. “Even before we lost my husband, I always said how incredibly blessed I was with the best in-laws.” When Cassidy heard the song for the first time, she was “completely taken aback,” describing the sweet tune as “absolutely perfect.”

Now, Cassidy says she sings the song to her son every night, to remind him of his father, who “was so proud to be a dad," she adds.
