Here's What Your Biggest Challenge in December Will Be, According to Your Zodiac Sign
Astrologer Valerie Mesa shares your horoscope for December, including what will be your biggest obstacle
December is a month of ups, downs and everything in between, so be merry but brace yourself — your biggest challenge this month might shake up your plans, leaving you with a change of heart and not the kind you'd expect under the mistletoe!
While there’s never a dull moment in the holiday season, it’s important to remember that these transits are here to help you grow and reconsider your approach to love, career and more importantly, your personal growth.
Starting with a sobering square between the sun in Sagittarius and Saturn in Pisces on Dec. 4, don’t be surprised if you suddenly feel the weight of responsibility hovering over you like a dark cloud. The pressure to meet everyone’s expectations is strong, so be sure to sort out your priorities.
Shortly after, Mars will station retrograde in Leo (Dec. 6), which can be similar to the effects of Mercury retrograde, except it involves the planet of energy, desire and passion. Gird your loins!
Between now and February 2025, Mars retrograde will leave us with no choice but to pause and recalibrate. This will likely consist of self-reflection and serious deep-diving on everything from our passions to our heart’s desires.
If you’re not questioning previous relationships, you could be halfway through a holiday shopping spree and suddenly realize you’re investing in the wrong people.
The intensity ramps up as we move through the month, as Venus will join forces with Pluto — the planet of transformation and all that’s hidden beneath the surface — in Aquarius on Dec. 7, which could shed light on the need for transformation in relationships, finances or perhaps even social connections.
The love planet will eventually make an opposition to Mars retrograde in Leo on Dec. 12, which makes things even trickier. Sparks could fly (and not in a good way), as this could trigger tension in love, creating those “should I stay or should I go?” moments in the process.
The energy peaks during the full moon in Gemini (Dec. 15), which may result in overthinking your communication style, specifically with those you are about.
If things feel unclear on Dec. 18, it’s all thanks to the sun’s square to Neptune in Pisces, creating confusion between what is real and sincere and what is simply a pipe dream. Don’t fall for the glamour of the illusion.
Just in time for Christmas Eve, Jupiter will face off with Saturn — which is equivalent to Santa Claus on a time crunch — putting a damper on the holiday cheer. New Year’s resolutions are no exception, as this could feel like a big reality check.
Also, with Mercury opposing Jupiter on Dec. 26, it’s probably best to sit back and wait for the holiday madness to pass instead of rushing to the store to make last-minute returns. Misunderstandings are almost inevitable today, so prioritize your peace of mind.
Last but certainly not least, Venus will clash with Uranus on Dec. 28. Besides stirring up unexpected twists in relationships and finances, it’s important to tread carefully as this non-conforming synergy could bring out the rebel in you and those around you.
Are you up for the challenge?
Read on for your biggest struggle in December, according to your zodiac sign.
Aries (March 21-April 19)
Get ready, Aries. Mars retrograde in Leo starting Dec. 6 is going to slow you down, and that’s not your style! Normally, you're all about charging ahead with passion and energy, but this retrograde (especially with Mars as your planetary ruler) is putting the brakes on your usual fiery drive. You might find yourself second-guessing past decisions and wondering if your current path is the right one.
It’s frustrating, I know, but this is your cue to take a step back and reflect. Instead of pushing forward, take a moment to reassess your goals, your relationships and what truly lights you up. The answers you’re looking for will come, but only if you’re willing to slow down and think things through. Consider this a chance to mentally prepare for the bigger, bolder moves to come.
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
Brace yourself for some serious transformation in your relationships this month, Taurus. On Dec. 7, Venus conjunct Pluto in Aquarius calls you to dive deep into what truly matters to you. Expect some emotional revelations and powerful shifts in how you connect with others on an intimate level, as this is a moment to release what’s been holding you back from fully embracing the authentic connections and passions that align with who you are now.
Before December comes to a close, your celestial ruler, Venus, will also clash with Uranus in your sign, and things could get... well, interesting. This transit brings a rebellious streak that can push you out of your comfort zone. You may feel like shaking things up, whether it’s challenging your usual routines or attracting someone who isn't necessarily your “type.” Get ready for unexpected twists — the key is to embrace change no matter how wild it seems.
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
December is bringing some serious reality checks, Gemini. Starting with a Sun-Saturn square on Dec. 4, the weight of responsibility may feel heavier than usual at this time, so take a moment to reassess your priorities. Are you giving enough to what truly matters? The sun will eventually face off with Neptune, too, bringing even more confusion as you could feel pulled in two different directions, which leaves you wondering what's real and what's wishful thinking.
The pressure to balance fun and duty could feel intense on Dec. 24, as Mercury opposes Jupiter in your sign, which can feel like sensory overload. This could be an over-the-top idea that sounds great in theory but is actually quite overwhelming. Finally, a square between Mercury and Saturn (Dec. 27) challenges you to be clear and realistic in your exchanges, even if this means having an uncomfortable conversation with someone significant

Tensions continue to rise on Dec. 12 as Venus opposes Mars, creating friction between your values and your pursuits — expect push-pull dynamics in love. Ready or not, it's time to let go of old fears and step into a more empowered version of yourself.

Are your pursuits authentic with your heart, or have you committed to the wrong agenda?
Venus will join forces with Pluto on the 7th, digging deep into your relationships and partnerships. Maybe it’s time to let go of a commitment — expect intense transformations in the way you connect with others either way. On Dec. 12, Venus will oppose Mars, bringing more friction and tension, specifically regarding your actions and heart desires. This could feel like a power struggle! A Venus-Uranus square on the 28th could also challenge your sense of security in a personal or professional setting.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
December could have you questioning your sense of direction, Virgo. Firstly, a square between the sun and Neptune on the 18th could leave you feeling confused or disillusioned, especially regarding your long-term goals in a significant partnership. Take a step back to reassess where you're headed — don't be fooled by illusions.
Mercury eventually opposes Jupiter on the 26th, bringing communication breakdowns and over-the-top promises. You may feel like you're being pulled in opposite directions, with your ideas clashing against reality. It’s a good time to slow down and check the details before making any big moves. Then, Mercury will square Saturn, forcing you to confront tough truths and dig deep to make sense of things
Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
What you’re afraid of now could be the breakthrough you’ve been waiting for, Libra. December is throwing some curveballs your way, starting with Venus conjunct Pluto in Aquarius on the 7th. This transit will force you to confront the deeper layers of your desires, your creativity, and even your love life. You could experience a powerful transformation, but it won’t come without a hefty dose of discomfort.
Then, Venus opposite Mars on Dec. 12 creates tension between your personal desires and your sense of belonging in the world, stirring up feelings of needing to prove yourself in both love and friendship. Finally, Venus squares Uranus on Dec. 28 adding an unpredictable twist. Despite feeling a bit unsettling at first, this square pushes you to break free from limiting beliefs about love and intimacy, but it might feel unsettling at first.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
December will challenge you to face your truth head-on and transform your personal and professional approach, Scorpio. On Dec. 6, Mars retrograde forces you to step back and reconsider your professional path. You might feel like the momentum you once had is slowing down, leaving you to question whether you’re headed in the right direction.
The next day, Venus will conjunct your modern ruler, Pluto, bringing emotional intensity as you uncover buried emotions and confront the darker aspects of your personal life and family dynamics. Lastly, the full moon in Gemini on the 15th could come with a flood of emotions about how you've been expressing yourself.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22–Dec. 21)
You're getting crystal clear on what you want and need, but the truth hurts sometimes, Sagittarius. On Dec. 4, a square between the sun in your sign and Saturn brings some serious reality checks, especially in your personal and home life. You may feel torn between your desire for freedom and the weight of responsibility. The full moon in Gemini on the 15th is no exception, as it could come with a series of revelations, whether it’s about your romantic connections, friendships or business relationships.
If you're feeling disillusioned on or around the 18th, the sun's square to Neptune blurs the lines between reality and illusion, especially in your personal life and life at home. Then, on Dec. 24, your celestial ruler, Jupiter, will clash with Saturn, creating even more friction between you and a significant other. This could feel like a tug-of-war between your desire for freedom versus the weight of your responsibilities. Mercury square Saturn on Dec. 27 delivers a final reality check, as you may realize your loved ones aren't necessarily supportive of your personal pursuits, while others of you find a way to bridge the gap between your ambitions and emotional needs.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
Don't put your need to self-reflect and desire to transform on the back burner, Capricorn. As of Dec. 6, Mars retrograde will force you to take a hard look at past relationships and financial decisions. Whether it's revisiting old emotional baggage or realizing you've been investing your energy in the wrong places, this retrograde transit is here to help you clear the clutter.
The next day, Venus conjunct Pluto in Aquarius signals a powerful moment for transformation, specifically regarding how you view your self-worth and your relationship with money. Deep revelations are likely, but Venus' opposition to Mars on the 12th fuels the fire. This opposition could stir up unresolved issues that may require conversations that are uncomfortable but necessary.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
This month isn’t as existential as it is transformative for you, Aquarius. For starters, Mars will retrograde as of Dec. 6, bringing unresolved tensions in your relationships to the surface. Are you investing authentically or have you been overcompensating? The following day, Venus will conjunct Pluto in your sign — expect intense emotional revelations that may radically shift how you want to present yourself. The key is to embrace the power of letting go to make room for new, authentic expressions of yourself.
On the 12th, Venus will oppose Mars, stirring up friction in relationships and forcing you to confront where you're compromising too much or holding back. This could be a defining moment for finding a balance between independence and partnership — don’t ignore the discomfort. Finally, Venus will face off with your modern ruler, Uranus, on the 28th, bringing unexpected disruptions and shifts to your personal life. This could challenge your comfort zone as you could feel an urge to break free, as a way to find new ways to nurture yourself and find inner peace.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)
December is pushing you to confront some uncomfortable truths about your home and family, Pisces. This month's full moon, for instance, will peak in Gemini and shake up your fourth house of home and emotional foundations, bringing a flood of emotions and revelations. Easier said than done, but it's time to release outdated family dynamics or emotional baggage that have been weighing you down.
The challenge doesn't stop there, as the sun will clash with your celestial ruler, Neptune, on the 18th, triggering feelings of confusion and uncertainty. This could leave you questioning whether you’re pursuing your goals for the right reasons or trying to fit into an image that doesn’t truly reflect who you are. On Dec. 24, Jupiter square Saturn will only intensify this struggle, as you could feel pulled in two directions: your dreams vs. your responsibilities.
