Homemade ice cream and Maryland snowballs store coming to Surfside Beach, SC. Here’s where

A new dessert shop offering homemade ice cream, Maryland-style snow cones, loaded waffles and edible cookie dough is expected to open in Surfside Beach this summer.

The Cup and Cone will open at 818 3rd Ave. South, a block away from Surfside Drive and a few stores down from Benjamin’s Bakery and Cafe.

Owners Don and Janna Sites said they will make the ice cream in house and have around 12 to 14 flavors. They said there will be traditional flavors, but they also plan to bring creative flavors as well.

Don Sites said opening the dessert store will be a “full circle” moment for them.

In 2010, Don said he bought an ice cream truck and drove around Myrtle Beach after he and Janna moved to the area. Their time in South Carolina didn’t last long as they moved back to Pennsylvania after a year.

Once in the northeast, they opened up a snowball stand. Snowballs are a Maryland dessert that are similar to snow cones but use finely shaved ice instead of crushed ice. They ran that for several years before moving back down to Myrtle Beach two years ago.

The interior of the shop is still being built, but the couple said they want the shop to have a “modern hangout vibe.” There will seating outside in the back of the shop and some inside.
