I spent $300 on dresses at Walmart — these are the styles I'm most excited to wear

From flattering sweater dresses to festive holiday party frocks, Walmart has standout looks you'll want to wear all season long.

Trust me: No matter what your dress style, Walmart's got a look for you. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

Like most people, I live in dresses during the warm summer months. Come fall and winter, though, it's all about pants and jeans for me. But sometimes I find myself scrolling on social media; I see a woman wearing a cute sweater dress, and I wonder, "Could I pull that off? Could I be a dress girlie all year long?"

I've recently been on a Walmart clothing kick, so I decided to see what the retailer had to offer on the frock front. Turns out, there were some seriously cute styles. Before I knew it, I had 12 dresses in my cart and I had to restrain myself from adding any more.

My Walmart dress haul included lots of different options — mini and maxi, plaid and satin, fancy and casual. There wasn't a single dress that was so hideously awful that I would refuse to show my face in it. In fact, every single style I tried on was actually pretty nice. Depending on your personal style, I feel pretty confident saying there's probably a Walmart dress for you. Take a look below at some of the finds I think are great for fall and winter.

The Pioneer Woman Smocked Bodice Midi Dress

The Pioneer Woman Smocked Bodice Midi Dress
I never imagined myself liking a boho style like this, but even I can't deny this dress is really cute. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

I never really got into the whole nap dress trend. It's just not my style. But there was something about this smocked dress that intrigued me, so I gave it a try. I'm still surprised, but I actually liked it ... a lot. I will say, the elastic bodice and sleeves are tight, so I would probably recommend sizing up for comfort. Other than that, this dress is a winner in my book.

Never in a million years did I think I, a NYC girl through and through, would be wearing The Pioneer Woman clothing, but here I am. I love the way this midi dress looks with ankle boots, but I bet it'd be just as cute with heels or flat mary janes.

Time and Tru Plaid Button Front Dress with Belt

plaid shirtdress
While the color combo of this dress was underwhelming for me, the fit was slimming and the fabric was really comfy. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

Okay, I will first say that I do not love the colors of this dress. The black and tan plaid looked way different online than it did in person. That said, I do like the shirtdress silhouette and the tie helps give the frock definition. If I had it to do over, I'd get this dress in the red plaid and I'm sure I would've liked it 100 times better.

I really liked that this plaid midi basically feels like your favorite flannel, just in dress form. It'll look good with bare legs or tights and the matching belt is great for cinching your waist.

Free Assembly Women’s Cozy Yarn Turtleneck Midi Sweater Dress

green mockneck dress
This dress is tight and leaves little to the imagination ... do with that what you will. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

This sweater dress is super soft and cozy, but way too tight for my liking. Don't get me wrong — it'd be very cute on someone who isn't afraid to show off their curves. That someone is not me, though. I will say, the green color is gorgeous and such a lovely shade for the season.

If you want a dress that will keep you warm from winter's chill, this midi dress will do the trick. As far as sizing, I'd say order your regular size if you don't mind a close cut. If you prefer something looser, order a size up.

Time and Tru Cable Sweater Dress with Long Sleeves

cable knit sweater dress
Cable knit can sometimes feel a little grandma-ish, but not this sweater dress. It was one of my Walmart faves. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

Okay, now this sweater dress is more my speed. I purposely ordered this one in a size larger because I don't like super tight, clingy sweater dresses. I probably could've gotten away with my regular size and it wouldn't have been too fitted, but I like the oversized look. And I have to say, the material of this dress is very soft and stretchy. I don't love the gray color on my complexion, so I'm currently waiting for the green to come back in stock in my size so I can grab it.

The cable knit pattern on this dress makes it feel a bit more special than most. Like me, other shoppers at Walmart are impressed by this pick. "This is the best sweater dress I have ever owned. The material is soft and perfect," one reviewer wrote. Another added, "Absolutely love the way this dress fits. The material feels amazing."

The Pioneer Woman Smocked Waist Maxi Dress

floral print dress
I can't stop thinking about the print on this dress. It's so beautiful and looks just as good in photos as it does in real life. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

The photos online really don't do this dress justice. The print is stunning! The pink and red flowers truly pop against the black. I also like that this dress feels festive for the holiday season without being so overtly Christmasy. Like the other Pioneer Woman dress I tried, the smocking is a bit tight on this one, but if you're sensitive to being squeezed, you might try one size larger than your normal.

In case you couldn't tell, I love a good midi or maxi dress, and this one is no exception. The material feels sturdy and substantial, so I wouldn't worry about freezing if I wore this frock on a freezing day. Just pair it with black tights and booties and you're good to go.

Time and Tru Shirt Dress with Long Sleeves

leopard print dress
Look at me, walking on the wild side, in a leopard print dress. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

While I'm not normally a leopard print person, I have to admit that I felt chic in this shirtdress. It didn't look like much when I unwrapped it, but when I put it on and tied the belt, it all came together. I will say — it was ever so slightly tight in the hips area, so it may run a little small for people with curves.

So you're not an animal print person, either? Well, one, you should still give this dress a try because it won me over. And two, there are lots of other prints to choose from, including polka dots and florals, plus a few solid color options.

Free Assembly Women’s Beaded Sweater Dress

pearl dress
I cannot wait to wear this dress this holiday season. The look on people's face when I tell them it's from Walmart will be priceless. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

This is, hands down, the best dress I tried on at Walmart. I am utterly obsessed with it! It feels like sweater material, but has some shape to it and sucks in the tummy and waist area. Yes, I know people say this often, but it's so true about this dress — it looks way more expensive than just $32 and no one will ever believe you got it at Walmart.

I initially purchased this dress in my regular size, but opted to go up a size to give myself bit of breathing room. I plan to wear this gorgeous find to a holiday party with black velvet heels and a red lip.

Other people who've purchased this dress love it just as much as I do. "Scoop has knocked it out of the park with this dress," one fan commented. Another wrote, "This dress is a quality piece. The fit is amazing. The fabric is so soft and comfortable that I feel like I'm being hugged. You cannot get a dress of this quality for this price anywhere!"

Time and Tru Plaid Mini Dress with Long-Sleeves

navy plaid dress
Even though short dresses aren't my thing, I really liked this plaid number. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

You've probably noticed by my previous picks that I am not a mini-dress person. I'm weird about showing knees — actually, everyone's knees kind of weird me out. Nonetheless, I took one for the team and tried on this plaid mini just for fun. It's a flannel-like material that surprisingly wasn't stiff or rigid at all. In fact, this flirty number had movement and the pleated hem gives it a nice feminine touch. I would totally consider wearing this style with tights and ankle boots or flats for the winter.

Walmart customers really seem to like this style. It has 4.9 out of 5 stars and several sizes are already sold out. In addition to the navy plaid I tried, this dress is available in a seasonal red print.

Free Assembly Women’s Sleeveless Sweater Knit Midi Dress

green tank sweater dress
If you want to turn heads when you walk in a room, then grab this curve-hugging green dress ASAP. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

Yes, another form-fitting sweater dress. No, still not my style or something I'd wear. But in terms of quality? This dress is right up there with pieces I've paid ten times as much for. No joke — this dress is currently just $9 at Walmart, a total steal! As I've said earlier, unless you don't mind the body-hugging look, order a size or two up.

Shockingly, this stylish sweater dress that has more 100 five-star reviews from shoppers is still available in every size in the green color. It's also available in black, but sizing for that one is limited.

If you're worried about making a sleeveless dress work in the winter, take a cue from one reviewer who said, "this dress looks nice with a long sweater or jacket."

Time and Tru Ribbed Hacci Knit Midi Dress

mockneck dress
There's a subtle ribbed texture on this dress that makes it feel a little less plain. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

I loved everything about this stretchy midi dress. The fabric isn't heavy, but it's still warm, and it drapes nicely over the body without being too tight. Plus, the burgundy color is perfection. My one qualm? The neckline didn't work for me. It's supposed to be a mock neck, but it looks very different on me than it does on the model.

Available in four fall shades, this comfy dress is machine washable and goes on easily over your head with no buttons or clasps to secure.

At less than $20, many shoppers agree this piece is a great value because it's versatile enough to wear for many different occasions. "Great dress," one commented. "This was a steal. It fits perfectly and there are so many ways to wear it. I bought it in three colors."

Free Assembly Belted Midi Shirtdress with Long Sleeves

satin shirt dress
One note of caution with satin: It wrinkles very easily! (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

Satin skirts and dresses have been trendy for a while, so I couldn't resist trying this shirtdress. Sadly, I didn't love it. It was a little large on me in my regular size and even with the belt tied, it still felt like I was wearing a too-big, too-long shirt. I will say, the wine color is amazing and the fabric felt great. The fit just wasn't right for me.

Unlike me, there are some Walmart shoppers who've had success with this dress.

"This is a really nice dress, the quality is there, and it's priced right," one person wrote in their review. "My only negative is it runs big." Another commented, "This is the perfect dress. It is very comfortable and versatile."

Time And Tru Tiered Plaid Shirt Dress

red plaid dress
This dress is giving Lumberjack-chic, and I'm not mad about it at all. (Jeanine Edwards)

Who doesn't love a little red plaid for the holidays? Even though I typically steer clear of short dresses, I had to give this mini a try. When I took it out of the box, I was initially worried that it was going to look like a flannel nightshirt ... and it did. Until I dressed it up, that is! I would say heels, boots or a dressier shoe are a must with this dress. Otherwise, it may look too much like PJs.

This comfy, cozy dress is available in four plaid combos in sizes XS-4X. Overall, shoppers who bought it have very positive things to say about the style and fit. "Very cute dress. Soft, light material," one person wrote. Another raved, "I love this dress! It has big pockets for my phone and other essentials."
