There is some functional purpose behind the polygon bezel on Seiko's new watch, the Prospex Diver Scuba Mechanical Polygonal. Easier to turn, apparently. But you get the feeling that's it's largely a design choice – and if you ask us, it's a good one.

According to Seiko, the watch "combines qualities of a sports watch with the elegance of a dress watch." Clearly, you buy a polygon watch because you want something that stands out. Something to talk about with your partner's friend's partner when you're left alone in a room together with nothing more than your drinks and some nibbles.

Here's what else you can tell them to keep the convo afloat.

  • It's coastline inspired! (Here's when you point towards the waves-inspired debossing on the dial.)

  • It's available in other colourways! Perhaps they could get a same-but-different one themselves? The choices are as follows: “pearl white”, “coastline cobalt” and “ocean grey and bronze dial”.

  • It's water-resistant up to 300 metres. (Now's your chance to mention it's a diver watch if you haven't already.)

Now, here are some things they probably won't care about but it's nice to know yourself.

  • It's scratch resistant

  • The hands and indices are coated in Lumibrite. So, it glows!

  • It's powered by an in-house automatic movement that is accurate to -15/+25 seconds per day with a three-day power reserve.

  • It conforms to professional ISO diving specifications. In other words, it actually does what it says on the tin.
