Much of the United States was faced with cold (ahem, very cold) weather this week, further adding to the feelings of, well, doom I’m experiencing at the moment. My solution? Throw my phone away (okay, not literally) and cuddle in bed watching feel-good shows that transported me to another world. I was snuggled under my coziest blanket, and when I actually had to step outside of my apartment to pick up a food order, I thought, “Hmm, should I just wrap this blanket around me?” I didn’t go that route, in the end, but it seems like Irina Shayk had the same thoughts as I did. Honestly, most of us probably did this weekend.

Shayk was photographed out in New York, looking in incognito as per usual in her sportswear-inspired sunglasses and her extremely New York-ish, all-black outfit that consisted of tall black leather boots from Maison Margiela—those toes gave it away—a black hoodie, with the hood covering Shayk’s head, and last but certainly not least, that blanket-like puffer coat that she has wrapped around her like it’s nobody's business.

It’s undeniable that you can no longer leave your home without a coat. But, the type of coat drastically varies. My husband had a funny idea to actually keep note of all the coats he sees while walking, and he concluded that everyone—like everyone—owns a black puffer coat. After he said this, I noticed the same thing (I own one, too!), so Shayk’s pick isn’t all that strange. But, where it does enter "unique" territory is the overall silhouette that is more sleeping bag/blanket like than a typical black puffer that can veer on the more fitted side.

But, a sleeping bag-esque topper has a myriad of benefits, so before you hate on it, listen up. I personally struggle to find a jacket that fits over my thick, snuggly sweater, but with a coat like Shayk’s, I don’t foresee that issue at all. The topper is roomy, which allows for proper layering without feeling constricted. Plus, if you opt for a longer silhouette, you can basically hide whatever you’re wearing underneath your coat (like leggings or sweats you’d prefer to keep to yourself). Last but not least, it’s a showstopping, conversation-striking piece, and that’s what fashion is about.

Below, shop more sleeping bag-like coats that will get you through the thick of winter in style and warmth. You’re welcome.
