Is this Japanese makeup ad a comment on gender fluidity?

Right now the Internet is filled with talk of gender fluidity. It’s the latest catchphrase, and with advocates like Cara Delevingne and Ruby Rose, more and more people are starting to question the restrictions and boundaries of gender and gender stereotypes.

Perhaps in response to this, Japanese makeup company Shiseido recently released this gender-bending ad:

We enter a classroom full of girls who grin at the camera as it moves around the room. After a while it pauses and one by one each “girl” is undressed – of both their makeup and clothing – to reveal that they are in fact boys. The video ends with the phrase “anyone can be cute,” followed by a shot of the latest products from Shiseido, which we can assume were used in the makeovers.

Though many Facebook commenters claim they could tell the boys were girls right from the get-go, the ad definitely speaks to the idea of men wearing makeup and to the definition of gender and gender roles in general.
