Julia Child Loved This Costco Food Court Favorite
The beloved TV chef just got even more endearing.
Americans have Julia Child to thank for making French cuisine accessible. The formally-trained chef became a household name over the years as she made intricate dishes accessible to the average home cook. In her show “The French Chef,” Child simplified meals such as boeuf Bourguignon and tarte aux pommes while keeping them full of flavor and sprinkling in nuggets of culinary wisdom along the way.
But just because Child was trained in Paris doesn’t mean the California native didn’t enjoy her share of classic American meals, too. We know she loved tuna sandwiches (specifically with Hellmann's mayo) and couldn’t get enough of the cheesy snack that smiles back, Goldfish.
Recently, we learned that the “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” author also liked to wrap up shopping trips at the Costco food court—and her order is surprisingly relatable.
Julia Child’s Go-To Costco Food Court Order
Shopping—especially for food—can work up an appetite. An article in The New York Times revealed that one of Child’s favorite post-shopping snacks was none other than a Costco hot dog, and that she loved them “as much as a fine French meal.”
That’s a substantial statement coming from an accomplished chef like Child—but we get it. Costco’s 1/4-pound all-beef franks have been a staple since 1984. They debuted just a year after the warehouse store first opened its doors, and they've been a hit since.
However, the food court favorite that Child indulged in isn't the same as the dogs we snag today. In 2008, just a few years after Child passed, Costco made the switch from its longtime hot dog manufacturer, Hebrew National, to its own brand, Kirkland Signature. One thing has remained unchanged, though: the price of the hot dog and fountain drink combo. At $1.50, it's quite the deal, and likely part of the appeal.
While you do need a Costco membership now to access the food court, the good news is that the retailer doesn’t plan on a hot dog price hike anytime soon.
So, next time you're on a Costco run getting ingredients for coq au vin, consider closing out your shopping with a hot dog like the iconic chef. As it turns out, Julia Child was just like us.
