Kamala Harris’s Concession Crowd, Dressed in Pink, Camo and American Flags, Told a Story Words Can’t Capture

Kamala Harris officially conceded to president elect Donald Trump during a speech at her alma mater Howard University in Washington, DC on Wednesday.
In the speech, Harris touched upon her hope for the future and resilience of her supporters. "I am so proud of the race we ran and the way we ran it,” she said. “Over the 107 days of this campaign, we have been intentional about building community and building coalitions, bringing people together from every walk of life and background, united by love of country with enthusiasm and joy in our fight for America's future. And we did it with the knowledge that we all have so much more in common than what separates us."
While there was a clear somber tone, it was what the people in the crowd were wearing that told a story that words simply couldn't capture. Women dressed in pink, the colors of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA), the sorority founded at Howard that Harris belongs to, held each other as they watched the VP say we must “accept the results.” A decidedly different vibe from the celebratory one just 24 hours before.
Elsewhere, people donned Harris merchandise including the famous camo hat that became popular this summer. Despite the ticket being essentially defunct, wearing it shows that people are resilient and that they won’t give up on the hopes and values Harris’ candidacy represented.
Wearing a pantsuit, the same sort of uniform Senator Hillary Clinton wore during her concession speech almost ten years ago, Harris's moment felt profound as a signal of strength.
While this is a pivotal moment, fashion is a reminder that art and creativity are a way to express ourselves in trying times.
