It was announced on Tuesday morning that legendary designer Kate Spade died of an apparent suicide, according to the New York Times.

The Times also reported that her husband, Andy Spade, was at the scene after the couple's housekeeper discovered the 55-year-old designer in the bedroom of their New York City apartment, where she had hung herself and left a note.

The news of this tragedy has left many wondering about Kate's daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade, and her husband of 24 years, Andy.

Andy Spade

Andy Spade, 55, is the older brother of actor David Spade. He met his wife in the early '80s when the two of them were co-workers at a clothing boutique in Arizona. "We worked together at a clothing store, and I was on the women's side," Kate told NPR. "He was on the men's side. And one day, his car broke down, and he asked me for a ride home. And we really started off as really great friends." By 1994, they were married and living in New York; the year prior, the couple had founded the fashion label Kate Spade New York with a friend, Elyce Arons. By 1999, Andy and Kate had also launched the men's brand Jack Spade together.

in 2006, the Spades, along with Arons, sold their minority stake in the company; Liz Claiborne acquired the company later that year.

After designing J.Crew's Liquor Store, a menswear boutique in downtown Manhattan, Andy launched Partners & Spade in 2008 with partner Anthony Sperduti; the company primarily works on brand development, store designs, and marketing. Most recently, Kate and Andy launched the accessories line Frances Valentine together.

Andy has yet to make a comment about his wife's death.

Frances Beatrix Spade

Frances, nicknamed Bea, was born in February 2005. The following year, Kate stepped away from designing to focus on her only child. There are few photos of Frances, but the appearances she has made have naturally always been with her parents.

In 2015, Kate and Andy announced they were developed another shoe and handbag line, Frances Valentine, named after their daughter and other family members. "Frances is a longtime family name on my dad’s side," Kate said in a November 2015 WWD interview. "My grandfather, father, brother and my daughter’s name is Frances. And then Valentine was my mom’s dad’s middle name because he was born on Valentine’s Day." In fact, Kate legally changed her name to Kate Valentine Spade in late 2015.

According to the New York Times, police did not know the whereabouts of Frances as of this morning.
