Kate Winslet's quiet statement make-up takes just seconds to do

Proving that sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference, last night Kate Winslet graced the red carpet for the Governors Awards in Hollywood with copper metallic eyeliner, adding to her otherwise neutral, soft smoky eye for a quiet statement look.

Worn against a backdrop of subtle, taupe eyeshadow tones and (crucially) inside her eye's waterline, the copper offered a striking contrast to Winslet’s green-blue eyes that made them pop; a simple make-up routine addition that works very hard for the few seconds it takes to do. While copper is great for making green and blue eyes zing (they're opposite on the colour wheel), this metallic works equally well to make brown eyes sparkle.

“I love copper on the eye line; it’s great for defining the eye without being too much or closing it off," says the make-up artist Lisa Eldridge, who frequently works with Winslet. "It’s not too dark and incredible for blue eyes, although it works well on most eye colours. It’s a great look for Kate.”

Of all the excellent buttery eyeliners out there, the two that the Bazaar beauty team uses on repeat (and have been formulated for use in the waterline, minimising the potential for any reaction) are the Victoria Beckham Beauty Satin Kajal Liner in Copper, and the Lisa Eldridge Beauty Seamless Glide Eye Pencil in Renaissance Gold (great for anyone for whom copper feels a little dark). Both sit beautifully against the colours of Lancôme's Hypnose Palette 5 Couleurs in Taupe Craze.

Winslet kept the rest of her look elegant and pared back – glowing skin, gently groomed brows, and lips and cheeks subtly enhanced in rosy tones – championing (as ever) her preference for a natural-looking approach to beauty. “I take pride in it [looking less-than-perfect on screen],” Winslet told Bazaar in an interview earlier this year, “because it is my life on my face, and that matters. It wouldn’t occur to me to cover that up.”
