Katie Holmes Proves That This Controversial Colour Combination Is Actually Very Chic
Katie Holmes may be best-known, fashion-wise at least, for her practical yet always chic off-duty wardrobe, but there's much to be said for her red carpet style, too. Over the years, the actor has delivered countless lessons in low-key event dressing by way of her favoured classic black dresses and boho-style slips – and on the other end of the spectrum, she has also served high-octane glamour in sequinned Pucci kaftans and that sheer, crystal-covered, Jonathan Simkhai netted dress that made waves in 2022.
For last night's 2024 CFDA Fashion Awards, Holmes opted for the latter – and debunked a major fashion myth while she was at it, too. Attending the event in New York City alongside the likes of Blake Lively, Paloma Elsesser, Kylie Jenner and Tyla, the actor stunned in a Carolina Herrera dress featuring cut-outs, a sultry low back, and a decidedly controversial colour combination: red and pink.

This particular pairing has long been considered a serious style faux-pas, but Holmes' look proves that when done right, red and pink can in fact be a match made in fashion heaven. The bold colour blocking design of her dress helps, as do the slightly less stark shades of bubblegum pink and candy-apple red.
So as to not detract from her sartorial statement, Holmes accessorised with co-ordinating red pointy Gianvito Rossi heels, magenta jewel drop earrings and a plain black clutch bag that matched the long ribbon tied at the back of her dress.
If you're on the market for autumn event dressing inspiration, then look no further. But if your budget doesn't quite extend to Carolina Herrera, we've found the best red and pink colour block dresses that will make just as much of an impact:
