A quick scroll through Katy Perry's outfits of late and – when she's not wearing naked dresses and starfish nipple pasties, cut-out leather gowns or red minis with mile-long trains – she can be found wearing almost exclusively swimwear. From her underboob-flashing crochet two-piece paired with robotic legs, her Fourth of July-themed diamanté bikini and her iridescent rubber rings 'fit, to more wearable styles like her gingham design and tie-dye swimsuit, worn with crochet beach cover-ups and belly chains.

So we almost didn't bat an eyelid when we saw Katy's latest Instagram post with the artist posing in yet more beach attire. But there's actually more to this 'fit than first meets the eye. Scroll through the carousel and layered under her red lace-trimmed tank top and coordinating low-rise lace skirt, Katy is wearing an orange Chanel thongkini.

Featuring a triangle top with crystal-studded cups and matching high-leg V-front bikini bottoms adorned with the same embellished decoration on the front with yet more crystal studs forming the iconic interlocking C's of the Chanel logo stamped onto the rear of the thong-cut.

The bikini in question is actually a vintage Chanel design from the French fashion house's spring summer 1995 collection, first modelled on the runways by none other than OG supermodel, Claudia Schiffer complete with a bejewelled belly chain and oversized flower hair clips that nail this season's corsage trend.

Katy isn't the first person to don the archival 'kini. Back in April, Kylie Jenner wore the black colourway having also repped a multicoloured version of the rhinestone Chanel bikini a year prior. Both styles were worn by Claudia (again) and Helena Christensen for a Chanel ad from the '90s, shared on Instagram by a nostalgic Schiffer.

Yep, when it comes to fashion, what goes around comes around.
