Like Kendall On The Catwalk, Here's How To Make The Low-Waist A High Priority
If you thought low-rise waistbands were popular, they're about to become ubiquitous. At the SS25 shows, the well-slung has become the must-have. Forget the restricting reassurance of the high-waist or even the middle of the road everydayness of, well, waists positioned at our natural waists, as it's those that go beyond the belt that designers are focusing on now for us to wear into next season.
This is a trend that has been lurking for some time, with Miu Miu's SS22 show being an early point of interest for the repositioning of our waistbands. Quickly, it's been one of the trends that has made its way off the catwalk and into the shops with ease and the recent shows show that it's going nowhere.
From New York to London, Milan to Paris, it has fast become the defining first-glance trend of the SS25 shows. Take, for instance, the look Kendall Jenner was wearing as the took to the catwalk for Schiaparelli. Jenner's look was a typically exaggerated take on the low-waist look befitting the house's surrealist-leaning aesthetic. The approach of Schiaparelli was exemplar of how others are doing it, too. There's a polish that's being executed here when it comes to low-slung waistbands. It's less about them falling loosely and louche, but with a particular precision and poise with glamorous, exacting execution. This message was particularly loud at Alaïa where on simple, swishing skirts the low-waist became a point of interest.
This sense of the immaculate might be the decree for next season but, for now, it's time to relax. Baggy, denim jeans are the solution to taking on this trend for the time being. With colder temperatures setting in, don't think you need to bare the navel to tick a trend box (you never need to do that whatever the season, FYI).
Instead, layer up with chic cashmere twin sets and dainty ballet shoes that take the jeans out of a place of grungy greatness to be an example of louche polish. Taylor Russell, arriving at Loewe was a great example of such an approach: pairing her low-rise denim with a simple slogan T-shirt, though her Loewe jeans offered additional corset-like belt detail.
For those looking to try this low-slung look without wearing denim, there's one such person that's the expert on styling such fashion: Paloma Elsesser. The model often chooses the low-slung waist to prove it a trend for everyone. Whether it's camouflage combat trousers or even a neat vintage Prada skirt, she's our girl for inspiration.
