Kim Kardashian just wore one of Princess Diana's most iconic necklaces
We all know that Kim Kardashian has a taste for vintage and archival fashion: whether it's wearing Marilyn Monroe's dress to the Met Gala or teaming up with Dolce & Gabbana to curate a fashion week retrospective of their most famous pieces. Now, Kim has taken this passion to royal new heights, stepping out over the weekend wearing one of Princess Diana's most iconic pieces of jewellery: the Attallah Cross.
Taking to Instagram, Kim shared photos from Saturday's LACMA Art+Film Gala in Los Angeles, to which she wore a plunging Gucci gown paired with the statement pendant made by luxury jewellery designer Garrard. Starring square-cut amethysts and circular-cut diamonds (totalling 5.25 carats!), the iconic piece was famously worn by the late Princess of Wales in the 1980s.
Royal fans will remember the necklace well, which Diana was photographed wearing on numerous occasions – most notably to a London charity gala in October 1987. While the royal didn't own the piece, it was often loaned to her by friend (and namesake of the necklace), Naim Attallah.
So, how did Kim come to be the owner of this iconic piece?
Last year, the necklace was up for auction in a royal and noble sale at Sotheby's. It was competed for by four bidders in the last five minutes of the auction, but a rep for Kim secured the pendant for £163,800 – more than double its pre-auction estimate!
While Kim has been the lucky owner of the piece for over a year, this weekend marked the first time she's been seen wearing it. The reality TV star and business woman shared a series of photos to her Instagram Story showing the pendant off, alongside images of the Princess wearing the cross too.
Previously speaking about the piece, Kristian Spofforth (head of jewellery at Sotheby’s London) said: "Jewellery owned or worn by the late Princess Diana very rarely comes on to the market, especially a piece such as the Attallah cross, which is so colourful, bold and distinctive."
