There’s a New Kind of Pear Hitting Shelves This Fall
It's extra versatile for all your cooking and baking needs.
While apples have become the unofficial fruit of fall, they’re not the only tasty produce that hits its peak in the autumn. Sure, no one really goes pear-picking like they do for apples, but you can’t deny that a ripe, extra-juicy pear isn’t the perfect snack. Plus, like an apple, you can use it in so many delicious fall recipes.
Many pear varieties are available in your produce section, with the Bartlett and Green Anjou (or d'Anjou) being the most popular. However, every pear has its flavor profile, texture, and even seasonability—making pears available all year round. However, they peak during the fall when all varieties are at their ripest.
This fall, Stemilt Growers—the minds behind the Rave apple and Half Mile Closer to the Moon cherries—are introducing a new pear to markets called the Happi Pear.
What Is the Happi Pear?
The Happi Pear is grown in Washington state in an area known for its nutrient-rich soil. The new variety is unique in its flavor and texture versatility.
When picked, the Happi Pear is green but will turn yellow over time. While you can eat the pear in both forms, there will be a difference in your experience.
What Does the Happi Pear Taste Like?
The Happi Pear is still green when picked and will offer a crispy and juicy bite. However, it will turn yellow and soften over time, bringing out even more juices. No matter when you choose to eat the pear, it will have a “bright, sweet flavor with a slightly tangy finish.”
If you have a texture preference, however, you can keep Happi Pears crisper for longer by storing them in the fridge or let them turn yellow and extra juicy by storing them on the counter.
Much like the Green Anjou, the Happi Pear is rather all-purpose, meaning it’s just as good enjoyed as a hand-held snack as it is in cooking and baking.
How to Cook with the Happi Pear
The sweet, yet tangy flavor lends itself well to both “sweet and savory recipes,” according to Stemilt. Plus, you can add the Happi Pear to your charcuterie board alongside bold cheeses, like Brie and Gorgonzola, savory meats, sweet jams, and toasty, crunchy nuts.
Try using the new pear varietal in salads, breads, cakes, soups, and preserves.
Where Is the Happi Pear Available?
Stemilt’s Happi Pear is hitting national retailer shelves for the first time this year. Previously, the pear was only available at the Stemilt Retail Store in Washington. While you can still find it there, the zesty new fruit will also be sold at conventional retailers, like H-E-B, Safeway, Jewel-Osco, Hy-Vee, and more this fall.
