On New Year's Day, Japan was struck with a deadly 7.5 magnitude earthquake, and the death toll is now at 55—and still rising as the search for survivors remains ongoing.

Today, King Charles penned a letter to Japan's Emperor Naruhito expressing his condolences over the tragedy.

"Your Majesty," Charles writes, " My wife and I were profoundly saddened to hear of the devastating loss of life and injuries caused by the series of earthquakes that have struck Japan. We have been following reports closely and I can only say how deeply we feel for all those who are suffering from the dreadful effects of this horrific tragedy. We mourn the many lives cut short and our thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones."

He concluded, "We greatly admire the bravery and courage of all those involved in the emergency search and rescue services. I know that my Government stands ready to support the people of Japan at this exceptionally difficult time." The King signed the letters "Charles R.," with the "R" standing for "Rex," which is Latin for King.

There's a warm relationship between King Charles and the Japanese Imperial Family, with Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko attending the coronation last year, and Charles attending Emperor Naruhito's enthronement ceremony back in 2019.

In his New Year's message, Emperor Naruhito said "I pray that the coming year will be a bright and hopeful one for people in our country and worldwide." The Japanese Imperial Family canceled their New Year's greeting event in the wake of the earthquake.
