King Charles’s Tailor Just Opened Its First Store Outside London

A long-standing British tailor is saying ’ello to the American market for the first time.

The Savile Row company Anderson & Sheppard has opened its first shop outside London, in collaboration with Bergdorf Goodman. The tailor, which has received a Royal Warrant of Appointment to King Charles III, has made its wares available on the second floor of Goodman’s, the retailer’s men’s store on Fifth Avenue in New York City.

While Anderson & Sheppard’s bespoke tailors have traveled to and from the United States over the years to work with clients, the Bergdorf Goodman collab marks its first physical presence in America. The capsule collection available to U.S. shoppers includes new pieces made of the finest yarns and cloths. That encompasses travel jackets, cashmere cardigans, knits, hand-woven tartan jackets, tweed overcoats, and more. To accessorize, there are chic cashmere and Muskox scarves and pocket squares.

Although this may be the first time the two companies are working together, Anderson & Sheppard and Bergdorf Goodman have shared many similarities throughout their storied histories. The two were founded just five years apart—Bergdorf in 1901, Anderson & Sheppard in 1906. Both have become well-loved for their commitment to craftsmanship, and just a couple of decades after opening, they both needed to relocate to larger spaces to accommodate their bountiful customers.

In 2012, Anderson & Sheppard expanded its bespoke shop with the addition of the Haberdashery. The slightly more casual store is meant to be a complement to its formal tailoring, offering trousers, casual jackets, sweaters, robes, scarves, and more. However, the brand remains best known for its English Drape–cut suits, created as a comfier alternative to military dress in the early 20th century.

As for Bergdorf Goodman, the store has been catering more and more to its male clientele in recent years. Along with its standalone men’s store, the company launched a men’s self-care shop in 2021, with grooming and wellness products tailored to those customers.

And while smaller boutiques may be attracting more shoppers than department stores nowadays, Bergdorf working with an independent tailor like Anderson & Sheppard may help bring some of those customers back into the fold. Especially if they’re interested in owning pieces that are quite literally fit for a king.
