What you need to know about House of the Dragon character Alys Rivers

We're halfway through House of the Dragon season two now, (we know we can't believe it either) and we've been introduced to a whole host of new characters, including the incredibly intriguing Alys Rivers.

Alys is first introduced in episode three when Daemon takes it upon himself to invade Harrenhal and take the cursed castle for himself. She then has a more prominent role in episode four when she introduces herself properly to Daemon, and she seems to know exactly what is going on with Daemon and his strange visions.

If you've read the book Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin which House of the Dragon is based on, then you'll know this isn't the last we've seen of Alys. So what do you need to know about her? Here's all the important facts.

Who is Alys Rivers?

Alys Rivers is a healer who lives in Harrenhal when Daemon takes over the castle. She is a bastard as signified by her "Rivers" surname. In the GOT universe is it so frowned upon to be a bastard that each area gives specific surnames to bastards from their area. Those in the north are known as a Snow aka Jon Snow, Sand in Dorne and Rivers in the Riverlands for example.

In the first two episodes we've seen of Alys on House of the Dragon she explains she took on the role of healer at Harrenahl after the last maester departed. She tells Daemon that he "will die in this place" after he has a vision while sleeping at Harrenhal.

So is she a witch? Or just good at predicting the future? Well to find out everything about her we need to look into the book House of the Dragon is based on, so only read on if you're happy with spoilers.

What happens to Alys Rivers in the books?

Ok, hi, you're clearly here because you're happy with spoilers. Diving straight in, after Daemon takes over Harrenhal, Alys remains at the castle, however Aemond and the green then take the castle back. Aemond orders the death of everyone who remains, apart from Alys who he takes to be his bedmate.

She becomes a strong part of Aemond's life and stops him from killing a squire who informs him of the Green's defeat at Lakeshore. She was left alone in Harrenhal when Aemond went to burn the riverlands and the castle was then invaded by Lady Frey, who finds Alys pregnant with Aemond's child.

Alys escaped with Aemond and she helped him to discover Daemon's location, through a supposed vision, which then lead to Aemond and Daemon's duel in which they both ultimately lost.

Following Aemond's deathm a few years later Alys was accused of being a witch queen and ruling a group of men at Harrenhal. She then claimed her son was the true heir of the Iron Throne as his father was Aemond.

She defeated a Targaryen army which included the death of a Ser Regis Groves who mysteriously died at the battle, with sources in the story still debating how he died, but all clues suggest Alys and her potential magical powers.
