This Laundry Room Makeover Might Just Have the Boldest Paint I’ve Ever Seen
ABOUT THIS BEFORE & AFTER
HOME TYPE: House
PROJECT TYPE: Laundry Room
STYLE: Colorful
SKILL LEVEL: Professional
RENTAL FRIENDLY: No
When it comes to decorating a space like a laundry room (or even a garage or a shed), you might as well give it a bold color to make doing chores that much more fun. Homeowner Carlee Hadrava (@thecobbles2023) has an extremely bright laundry room in the home that she shares with her husband and son, but “they don’t know the utility room exists!?” she jokes.
Nonetheless, because Carlee spends ample time in there, she decided to give it her own personal flair, including a bold red paint choice.
The red paint packs a punch.
“I started to find my style a lot more once I’d lived in our new property for a year,” Carlee says. “I felt its previous color scheme of beige/white wasn’t showing my personality, and that’s something I love to inject into the home.” (However, before the laundry room was beige and white, it wasn’t a laundry room at all! More on that later.)
She chose Lick’s Red HTK 57 — which, fun fact, is an exact color-match for Heinz ketchup — for the walls and ceiling. (For advice on painting with a deep red such as this, check out this pro painter’s tips).
In terms of color scheme, the laundry room is black and white and red all over. The makeover includes professionally installed black-and-white patterned flooring, black-and-white curtains, and black-and-white accessories to complement the bold red.
The laundry room renovation used leftover kitchen cabinets.
The laundry room is actually a fairly recent addition to Carlee and her family’s home. They borrowed space from the garage and knocked down a wall in their old kitchen in a larger renovation to make room for a designated space for a washer, dryer, and chest box freezer. (The latter is one of Carlee’s favorite additions!)
During the renovation, Carlee and her husband saved money by using the kitchen’s old cabinets for storage in the laundry room. “It was something I wasn’t keen on at first, as the cupboards all looked quite dirty,” she recalls. “But after really cleaning them down and replacing the handles, I couldn’t have been happier we made that decision. … They adapted perfectly into the new space created.” Not to mention — they saved her lots of money.
Carlee was also able to salvage the window and door from the old kitchen to use in this room. “This involved introducing insulation to the walls and ceiling to comply with building regulations, the removal of the garage door, and the creation of a timber stud wall to situate the recycled kitchen window in.”
Now, she has the laundry room she’s always envisioned. “It’s an extremely hardworking space, and I love the fact I have all my appliances to do the washing in one area,” Carlee says. “It definitely makes me feel proud that we’ve achieved our vision for this space and certainly makes doing household chores a bit easier when I’m in this space!”
