When it comes to beauty advice, we know we can turn to Laura Geller. The legendary makeup artist and founder of Laura Geller Beauty constantly helps fans update and enhance their makeup routine, and now she’s sharing her top “easy” makeup tips for women over 50.

“This is a conversation for women in their 50s where they no longer have to feel insecure, because there’s so much talk around aging now, and there’s so many things that they can do to stop feeling that way,” Geller tells Prevention of the “Who Hasn’t” campaign, which encourages women to be confident at any age. “I recently did an Instagram Live, and I was talking to somebody, and I said, ‘I wish I could tell that younger woman in her 50s not to freak out and be upset or insecure about turning 50 and beyond.’”

Geller believes that women have a lot to learn from one another. “There’s so much talk today that never existed before—and opportunities for people to combat [insecurities],” she says. One of the ways Geller suggests rebuilding confidence is with makeup. Below, we’re sharing her top makeup tips for women over 50 to embrace their beauty at any age.

Switch up your products

“I always say you have to meet your makeup needs where your skin is at,” Geller says. “So what that means is, if you’ve been doing your makeup a certain way for so long, and it’s habitual, and your makeup is no longer looking the way you want it to look, it may be that you have to tweak some things in your routine.”

Geller suggests thinking about the formula of the products you’re using to boost your complexion. Specifically, if you use a powdered foundation despite your skin feeling or looking drier. In this case, she suggests opting for a tinted moisturizer or cream foundation to make the skin “look a little more fluid and dewy.”

Give your skincare a boost

“Just like your makeup, you also have to relook at your skincare sometimes,” Geller says. “It doesn’t even matter what decade you’re in, shaking up your skincare routine is going to sort of propel your skin to change.” She suggests seeking out new, innovative skincare products and focusing on amplifying your nighttime skincare routine to give your complexion a boost.

But that doesn’t mean adding a slew of products to your routine; she suggests keeping your morning skincare simple. “During the day, the less you do, the better,” she says while emphasizing the importance of using SPF and a primer for mature skin.

“Primer is the last thing you do before you put makeup on, and the purpose of primer is that it mimics a more perfected complexion so that you don’t need as much makeup and your makeup lasts longer,” Geller explains. “A hydrating primer acts as a moisturizer too. You really can shelve your moisturizers and serums and just use a hydrating primer, but always something with SPF too. I do think primer is critical, and I think what you’ll find is you’ll save a lot of time doing a lot of stuff to your face in the morning.” Geller recommends her brand’s Spackle Skin Perfecting Primer: Hydrate.

Add volume to lashes

For women over 50 who often struggle with sparse lashes (which may happen with age), Geller suggests opting for a thick, dense mascara “to make them pop and look more volumized.” The thicker the formula the better, she says, adding that choosing a product with a dense brush is also helpful for creating more volume. Geller also says to “not stray from black,” no matter your complexion. “There’s nothing like black mascara to make your lashes pop,” she says.

Use a magnifying mirror

“As you get older, your eyesight starts to be more challenging,” Geller explains, which is why she suggests using a magnified and lighted makeup mirror to perfect your makeup application. “The closer you see yourself—and no longer struggle to see what you’re supposed to see to put your makeup on—the better your makeup is going to look.” Geller shares that she uses a double-sided makeup mirror with 10x magnification on one side and normal (1x) magnification on the other side. “When I’m done applying my makeup, I flip it back to 1x, because that’s the way people are going to see you.”

Liven up your complexion

The strategic use of blush is one of Geller’s favorite tips. It “always gives the skin a pop and makes you look healthy,” she explains. When selecting a shade of blush, Geller suggests choosing from the different grades of pinks, mauves, and berry tones. Berry tones work beautifully on deeper skin tones, while lighter pinks and mauves complement fair skin tones. If you decide to stray from colors in that family and opt for warmer, peachy blushes, Geller still recommends adding a “pop of pink” to the apple of the cheek—“there’s just something so youthful about it,” she says.

Geller hopes that these makeup tips help women feel more confident in their age. “It’s a privilege to age, and I empathize with anybody getting older because it is a scary thing, but it’s a privilege, too,” she explains. “And so the privilege part of it is, you know, what can I do that’s different and exciting? So I think it’s a great idea if you have been doing your makeup the same, to change it up...to step out of the box is my best advice for women over 50.”
