Election Day 2024: Here's What You're Allowed to Wear to Vote
Instagram, TikTok
Did you know there are rules about what you can wear when you're voting? And I’m not talking about fashion rules in the “don’t wear white after Labor Day” sense. Electioneering laws, which ban statements for or against a candidate or referendum on the ballot at the polls, vary by state. But still, many say that campaign merch –yes, including the Harris Walz camo hat in some cases– is off-limits. In fact, 21 states ban campaign apparel altogether, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL).
Instead, what you wear to the polls on November 5th can be a different kind of statement – one that avoids specific ballot initiatives (think something that says “Vote No on Prop 4”) or candidates' names (think something that says Vote Harris)– but still allows for a special moment that you can proudly post about.
Take these celebrities, for example, who have already cast their ballots, sharing both their endorsements and their fits for all to see.
Selena Gomez wore a red sparkly gown and high heels to drop her ballot off before the Wizards of Waverly Place red carpet.
While Olivia Rodrigo mailed in her ballot, the singer still had the cutest look for the occasion, wearing a white button-up and black mini skirt for the TikTok video she made.
Ariana Grande wore a pink and blue Glinda-esque plaid tank top for her voting selfie.
Billie Eilish wore a more realistic-looking voting outfit and dropped her ball off wearing gray hoodie, basketball shorts, and hoop earrings.
As for me, decidedly not a celebrity but someone who thinks about their outfits constantly, I'm going to keep it easy. I plan to literally exercise my right to vote and run to the polls Tuesday morning, likely wearing my ON running shorts, a pair of Veja running sneakers, and a For Days cropped hoodie.
