Wintertime in Rome is one of the most underrated times of year in the city. The streets and shops are adorned with lights, there are holiday decorations everywhere, and the smell of freshly roasted chestnuts looms around every corner. When the cooler seasons in Italy come around, that’s when I’ve noticed the city’s It Girls experimenting a bit more with their footwear choices.

As opposed to the much warmer summer months where you throw on a rotation of the same few pairs of sandals or stylish sneakers in the scorching hot weather, both fall and winter allow for ample opportunities to play around with trendier yet functional shoes. While out and about doing some holiday shopping, I’ve picked up on a few standout shoe trends from stylish women around the city.

There’s nothing more of a staple in my shoe collection than tall leather boots during these rainy Italian winters. I’ve seen so many iterations of these knee-high boots from Vince Camuto; they truly go well with just about anything. I love the stiletto heel on this affordable version from Amazon, while the almond color of these leather boots from Loeffler Randall is super trendy at the moment. These cream-colored zippered boots from Mango are incredible, too. I haven’t stopped thinking about these uber cool stitched leather boots from Zara with the contrast hem detail, either.

As much as the Italians like to experiment with trends, there’s always a traditional style element that manages to stick around in some way. For winter footwear, that would be none other than the classic pump, which can be seen on virtually any chic Italian businesswoman in my neighborhood.

I’ve seen so many twists on Mary Jane recently across my Instagram feed, but also IRL. Italian girls are loving a velvet moment, and this unique bright-pink pair from Free People is getting added to my cart immediately. Buckles and hardware have also been dominating the Mary Jane scene as of late, and these pairs from Anthropologie and Zara perfectly scratch my brain. The higher the platform, the closer to the (Roman) gods. Platform booties specifically have been popping up on my radar more and more lately. This Amazon option perfectly blends retro and modern vibes, and if you’re looking for a leveled-up version of a Chelsea boot, this square-toed pair from Vagabond Shoemakers is it. These super high leather platform booties from Zara are another cool pick, while this cognac-colored buckled pair from Anthropologie is very on-trend at the moment (and looks super comfy).
