You’ll never guess which fashion brand is the most popular on Instagram

Spoiler alert: It’s not one of the big designer ateliers.

Macy’s just released its annual report determining which fashion brands are the biggest players on Instagram. The research looked at the number of followers as well as hashtag mentions to determine which brands held the most influence on the popular social media platform.

While many of the top tier fashion houses like Gucci, Dior and Christian Louboutin made it into the top 20, sitting in the no.1 spot by a landslide – with more than 18 million followers and close to 48 million hashtag shares –was none other than Nike.

It’s no secret that Instagram has become increasingly important in the world of retail. Misha Nonoo recently presented her fashion show via Instagram at New York Fashion Week, and apps like Like It To Know It now allow users to shop directly from images on the social platform. And that’s not even taking into account the number of fashion bloggers, influencers and stores using Instagram to market their brand’s lifestyle.

While this isn’t the first year Nike has come out on top – they also topped last year’s list – it is surprising to see just how ahead of the game they are. The closest contender for followers was fellow athletic company Adidas Originals with a comparably much lower following of six million, while Prada took the second spot for hashtag mentions with a respectable 18 million.
