Take a look inside the new Zunzibar beach bar-themed restaurant on Hilton Head
Chris Smith wants Hilton Head Island to get weird.
He’s opening a bar and restaurant called Zunzibar with live music, rainbow umbrellas, “DANK!” sauce and “Booty Roll” sandwiches to do the trick. It’s the first full-service version of Zunzi’s, a sandwich shop that opened in Savannah in 2005 with mottos “Let’s get weird!,” “Sh** yeah!” and “Livin’ the dream!”
The beach-themed space had its soft-opening in May with a grand-opening set for July 9. It’s located near Coligny Beach Park and next to The Sea Shack and Captain Woody’s at the old “Steamers” location. The restaurant won’t be completely decorated until the grand opening, and staff members are taking the time to work out any kinks.
“We want to slow roll it and give our team a chance to breathe,” Smith said. “And also be able to get to know our community.”
As part of that effort, Smith said all service industry and hospitality workers will get 50% off food from June 1 to June 30.
Smith isn’t a stranger to the restaurant industry. He previously owned two Five Guys franchises in the area, one on Hilton Head Island and another in Bluffton. Smith purchased the Zunzi’s in Savannah in 2014. Zunzi’s opened in Atlanta in 2018. At that time it also moved to a new location in Savannah, on Drayton Street, and added a bar aspect: Zunzibar. Last year, a free-standing Zunzibar opened on Tybee Island.
Hilton Head’s Zunzibar location food menu ranges from sandwiches to wings to kid menu items. The drink menu covers hemp drinks, local beer and shots. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
