Luke Bryan Will Miss 'American Idol' Tonight as He Reveals He Has Tested Positive for COVID

American Idol continues tonight with host Ryan Seacrest presenting the first live show of the season. But while judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie will be front and center to weigh in on the state of the competition, Luke Bryan will not be in attendance.

On Monday, the country singer confirmed that he would be sitting out after testing positive for COVID-19. "I’m sad to say I won’t be a part of tonight’s first live @AmericanIdol show. I tested positive for COVID but I’m doing well and look forward to being back at it soon," Luke said.

Instead, former American Idol judge Paula Abdul will be stepping in as a temporary replacement. She will be there as the top 16 contestants are whittled down to just 12 at the end of Monday night's episode.

On the show's Instagram page, ABC reshared Luke's announcement and said that he is currently "resting now in quarantine at home."

"We're wishing him a speedy recovery," the network added in a statement.

Upon hearing the news, fans started sending well wishes to the country singer. "Feel better soon Luke❤️💋," one fan wrote on Instagram. "That's horrible! I hope you feel better soon Luke! It won't be the same without your smile, your laugh, and your personality," another fan tweeted. "Nooooooooo! Get better Luke! We need that 'country' point of view!" a different fan said.

Meanwhile, Paula shared the news of her return on social media. "The secret’s out…I’m beyond excited to make my return to the judges desk on @AmericanIdol TONIGHT‼️," she wrote.

Right now, it's unclear when Luke will return to the Idol panel, but we will be sure to update this post quickly if we hear anything. In the meantime, we hope Luke continues to get better and rest up — after all, Katy and Lionel are going to need him when the competition gets down to the final contestants this spring.
