Man Is Denied Leave To Attend A Baby Shower, His Response Is Winning The Internet

Earlier this year we reported on the rise of dad-chelor parties – AKA baby showers for men. And we rejoiced that the world was recognising the right of dads-to-be to celebrate impending parenthood. But it seems not everyone is as au fait with dads taking a greater role in the baby shower process.
A hilarious piece of paperwork, which has found its way onto the Internet, appears to show a soldier being denied leave from work by his CO to attend a baby shower because “men don’t go to baby showers.”
The soldier’s leave refusal was shared to Reddit, before, miffed about missing out on the celebration, the soldier decided to resubmit the holiday request form giving a new reason for taking leave.
“Going home to the Appalachian mountains to drink whiskey, wrestle bears and shoot lots of guns,” the second version read.
“I also plan to grow out a beard, chop down a hundred trees with my axe and eat 10lbs of thick cut bacon with my wife, whom I plan to have lots of unprotected sex with because I’m a man and that’s what we do. Football.”

Both forms have since gone viral with over 8 million views and hundreds of comments. But, some were quick to suggest the leave requests could in fact be fake.
“Fake as hell, why aren’t any of the other boxes filled out?” one user commented.
“No CO would ever, ever use a red pen for corrections on a leave form (let alone even carry a red pen),” added another.
Nevertheless, the post has served to ignite a debate about gender stereotypes, and the rights and wrongs of men attending baby showers.
“I literally thought that men weren’t really supposed to attend baby showers. Like, isn’t it a thing where it’s the mother’s lady friends?” one user asked.
“To be fair, baby showers are usually Women only gatherings,” agreed another.

But others were quick to defend men attending baby shower parties.
“Every baby shower I’ve ever been too had men,” wrote one commentator. “Everyone was in agreement if you refused to show on the grounds you were a man, you’re a asshole,”
“I had a coed baby shower so that my fiancés family could meet mine and we could all mingle, turned out to be a really good time,” added another.
“We don’t believe in sexist s*** like that anymore,” summed up one user.
Whether the post is real or fake, it has thrown light on the fact that some people still believe baby showers should be a woman-only affair. But the officer’s response, fake or not, was the perfect opportunity to demonstrate how ridiculous that is. And anything that helps to break down gender stereotypes has surely got to be a good thing right?
