Man's Live-in Girlfriend and Mom Urge Him to Get Rid of His Dog After It's Deemed 'Untrainable'
A man is seeking advice from Redditors after his girlfriend and mother told him to give up his current dog
A man is seeking advice from the Reddit community after finding himself in a difficult situation with his girlfriend and family regarding his beloved dog.
The 29-year-old man initially hesitated to get a dog due to the heartbreak of losing his previous pet. However, he did, and now faces pressure from his girlfriend and mother to abandon his current pup, a Belgian Malinois.
“I told them that abandoning that dog would be equivalent to tearing a limb off me,” the man writes in his Reddit post. He goes on to express the depth of his commitment to his pet, stating, “I told them that in case I am forced to abandon my dog, I would sell everything off and disappear.”

The situation began when the man and his girlfriend of three years decided to take in a puppy born to her family’s dog. Despite the girlfriend’s initial enthusiasm for a pet, the poster says she has shown little interest in sharing the responsibilities of caring for the pup.

“Despite being mainly my GF’s desire to get a dog, she never stepped up to the responsibilities of dog ownership, be it financial or otherwise,” he notes. “Everytime I was asking her to contribute by paying for his food or even walking him, she would sigh before saying yes.”
The man has been dedicating four to five hours each day to caring for the dog, including walks and playtime. However, the animal has proven to be challenging, as he only responds to the 29-year-old’s commands and has a habit of chewing up slippers and shoes.
In an effort to address the issues, the couple sent the dog to a training center, but the trainer deemed him “untrainable" based on his inability to acclimate to the training environment. The trainer added that it'll likely take two people to walk the dog going forward.
Following this assessment, both the man’s girlfriend and his mother, who lives with them, admitted that their lives would be easier without the dog. But, the poster simply refuses to get rid of the dog. With the situation at hand, the man is torn between his love for his dog and the pressure from his girlfriend and family.
Many commenters believe the family shouldn’t listen to just one trainer’s evaluation of the dog.
“Do some research to find the right trainer for your breed of dog,” one user suggests.
Another notes that a Malinois take a special kind of handler. “Look up trainers that specialize in Mals. Mals are very smart and very hard to train, therefore finding a trainer that does for specific breeds might be best.”
