Dining at McDonald’s can really be experienced as its own seasonal calendar. You’ve got Boo Bucket season in October, Holiday Pie season in December, and McRib season whenever Mickey D’s deems fit. But the one time of year we can count on, almost as much as the Big Mac and French fries themselves, is Shamrock Shake season.

The Shamrock Shake has been a seasonal menu icon since its nationwide debut in 1970. Its signature green color and creamy, minty flavor is a staple on the menu during the St. Patrick’s Day season—and, this season is no exception.

McDonald's Shamrock Shake Returns

McDonald’s beloved Shamrock Shake is rolling back out on menus nationwide now for a limited time.

The mint milkshake isn’t the only star headed back to McDonald’s. Following Grimace’s successful rebrand with the Grimace Shake in 2023, Mickey D’s is bringing back the purple mascot’s Irish uncle, Uncle O’Grimacey, to celebrate the shake’s return.

Uncle O’Grimacey hails from Sham Rock, Ireland, and debuted as the Shamrock Shake spokesperson in 1975. He quickly disappeared in the ‘80s, but now he’s returning for a Grimace family reunion to usher in the start of St. Patrick’s Day season.

Uncle O’Grimacey is making his triumphant return to commemorate Shamrock Shake season and pay tribute to his favorite charity’s 50th anniversary. Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is celebrating 50 years of keeping families close when a child receives hospital care. In honor of the milestone year, McDonald’s is getting back to its roots.

The very first Ronald McDonald House, built in Philadelphia, was funded by Shamrock Shakes. So, this year, McDonald’s will bring that tradition back by donating 25 cents from every Shamrock Shake purchase between Feb. 10 and March 23 to RMHC.

McDonald’s is also releasing a line of exclusive Uncle O’Grimacey merch, including t-shirts, hats, and crewnecks, and a portion of those purchases will benefit RMHC, as well. The merch will be available on McDonald's Golden Arches Unlimited site.

While Uncle O’Grimacey is returning for the Shamrock Shake, McDonald’s fan-loved Oreo Shamrock McFlurry is also returning.

The minty Oreo McFlurry joined menus in 2020, long after Uncle O’Grimacey took his extended leave to Sham Rock, so, hopefully, the shake-loving mascot gets to try his favorite dessert in a new format this year.

Because of the promotion, it’s safe to assume that the beloved Shamrock Shake and Oreo Shamrock McFlurry will be on the menus late into March. So, you’ll have plenty of time before, and even a few days after, St. Patrick’s Day to get your hands on the treat.
