Meet Cheese Slaw: The 5-Ingredient Dip That’s Better Than Pimento Cheese

We can't stop eating this Southern snack.

At Allrecipes, we’re all about easy dips and spreads, so it’s rare that a dip recipe ever dodges our radar. But, just when we thought we’d snacked on every spread in the book, we’ve discovered a new Southern specialty to love.

This easy crowd-pleaser only takes two steps and five ingredients to throw together, and it’s sure to charm any cheese lover. It might play tricks on your tastebuds, but nobody at the table will complain.

What Is Cheese Slaw?

Meet your quirky new appetizer offering: Cheese Slaw. Although it looks like a crunchy coleslaw, this creamy, cheesy dip is far more decadent—and, might we add, delicious.

As soon as we saw our friends at Southern Living make Cheese Slaw, we couldn’t wait to try it out. This Roanoke-famous recipe is like a cousin to pimento cheese, but Swiss cheese replaces the Cheddar, and banana peppers replace the pimentos. And, shockingly, it really “does look like slaw,” said recipe developer Nicole McLaughlin.

It starts with a pound of Swiss cheese (shredded by hand, so you get long cheese strands that resemble slaw). Finely diced green onion, jalapeño, and banana peppers add color, crunch, and plenty of zing. Then, creamy mayo brings the whole thing together, providing the perfect amount of richness and tang.

“I didn’t expect it to be that, like, magically delicious,” McLaughlin shared. “You’ve got that brine from the banana peppers so it makes it feel like a coleslaw, but you got the little fresh kicks from the jalapeno and the green onion—10/10.”

This dip is tangy, fresh, and balanced with an irresistibly tender texture from the freshly shredded cheese. So go ahead and spread it on your sandwiches, slap it on a grilled cheese, or eat it by the spoonful. If you love pimento cheese as much as we do, you’ll find a new favorite in this Southern delicacy.

How to Make Cheese Slaw

This two-step recipe is perfect to keep in your back pocket for last-minute entertaining—it’s as simple as shredding and stirring.

To make it, grate a pound of Swiss cheese (use the larger holes on the grater to get bigger, longer strands). Then, add a half cup of finely chopped green onions, one-third cup of finely chopped jalapeño peppers (seeds removed), three-quarters cup of finely chopped banana peppers, and three-quarters cup of mayonnaise. Stir it together, and it’s ready to serve.

From here, you can feel free to adjust or sub-in ingredients as desired. Some home cooks add shredded mozzarella to the mix, but that’s optional. Then, serve it with any crackers, from plain saltines to crunchy Triscuits or even fresh crudités.
