Meghan Markle broke two royal traditions in one day
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were in Edinburgh earlier this week for their first official visit to Scotland — and Markle is continuing to break the mold when it comes to royal traditions.
While the couple visited a local cafe, Social Bite, on Tuesday, cafe employee Alice Thompson reached in for a handshake, but Markle surprised her with a hug instead.
“Outside the shop I went to shake her hand and she nudged it out of the way and embraced me with a cuddle,” Thompson told The Daily Mail. “I wouldn’t know about any of the other royals, but they were much more down to earth than I imagined.”

When it comes to the Queen and other senior members of the royal family — there is a “no-touch,” rule. You have to wait until the royal extends their hand to take it. Hugs, kisses and touches are pretty unheard of — so a simple embrace is a huge break in tradition for a soon-to-be royal.
Shortly after, Prince Harry’s fiancée broke another tradition — this time it had to do with her handbag. She was spotted rocking a very Scottish Strathberry crossbody bag (which, of course, is already sold out) as she greeted fans.
Queen Elizabeth and Kate Middleton typically carry clutches (or bags with small handles) — and often grab on to these clutches with both hands in order to avoid shaking hands with people when it might be a little awkward.
Well, that’s a bit awkward.
