A groom-to-be and his mother are clashing over the choice of song for their mother-son dance at his upcoming wedding.

In a post on Reddit's "Wedding Drama" forum, the groom, who is getting married in June 2025, described his predicament as "really silly," but noted that he's honestly "torn on how to handle it."

"My mother and I have been arguing about what song to dance to. I’ve been looking forward to the mother-son dance, it’s one of the most moving parts of any wedding I attended," he wrote. "My mother wants a very specific song and is unwilling to do anything else. She would listen to/sing this song to me when I was a baby and says it was always her intent to dance to it with me at my wedding."

The song? "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)" by Alvin & The Chipmunks.

However, the groom isn't sold on the idea of having the Christmas song played during one of the most special moments of his formal wedding.

"Now I understand why she wants it to be that song so badly, but I was a baby and have no recollection of these moments with my mom and no special connection to the song whatsoever," he reasoned. "In fact I just flat out don’t like it, don’t think it makes sense for a mother-son dance in a June wedding."

The groom has offered alternative song options, and has even tried to compromise with his mother by suggesting they find a "digestible cover" of her desired song. But so far, no luck.

"There’s no room for compromise on her end and she’s hurt that I want a different song," he said, before asking Reddit users, "Who’s in the right here? Any ideas on how to resolve this?"

Reddit users in the comments section were amused by the post, with many mothers jumping in to share what songs their babies were obsessed with.

But the top comment offered a piece of advice that one Redditor described as "the perfect solution." An individual recommended that the mother and son dance to the jazzy version of "Christmas Don't Be Late" by Norah Jones.

"What a beautiful idea! It allows the mother to remember the tender moments of him as a child, but acknowledges that he's now a grown man," another Redditor added. "It's a mature version of the child's classic."

Meanwhile, another commenter suggested the groom lean into the silliness of the song for his mom's sake.

"I would use the song," they wrote. "You obviously don't care what song it is, you only are dragging your feet because you think it's embarrassing. Yes, it's your wedding, and it's about you and your wife, and not about your mom, but it's one small thing that will mean the world to her.

They commented, "So you get on the microphone and tell the guests 'Now, I know this song isn't traditional for the mother/son dance, and it's not even the right season for it, but this is the song my mom used to sing to me when I was a baby. She's known since I was an infant that she wanted to dance with me to this song at my wedding. For her, it symbolizes the bond that she and I have.' "

Another person added the groom should end the proposed pre-song speech by saying "'or maybe it’s just payback for being a difficult baby' " before laughing and throwing "a Santa’s helper hat on."
