Nancy Pelosi's Impeachment Outfit Is a Style Statement for the Ages
Some people have a go-to dress for weddings, or a designated job interview blazer, or a beat-up pair of gardening sneakers. Nancy Pelosi? She's got an impeachment suit.
The Speaker of the House wore the same black skirt suit to oversee both of the impeachment votes in the House against President Trump. Never before has a politician had a chance to flip the sartorial bird to a president in such a way, because never before has a president been impeached twice—and Pelosi did not let this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity pass her by.
In December 2019, the first time she donned her impeachment suit—a sharp, collarless affair with a slim zipper in place of buttons—the buzz was all about the brooch she'd chosen to pair it with: a gold piece modeled after the Mace of the United States House of Representatives, a centuries-old symbol of American legislative power. Altogether, it came off as somber and sovereign. Presiding over the House with a gavel in her hand, she recalled a black robed judge more than an elected official.
Two years later, as she prepared to once again call a vote on an article of impeachment against Donald Trump, Pelosi left the pin at home. The message wasn't about underscoring her authority as much as reminding the public that Trump had been impeached not once, but twice—and for that, repeating the skirt suit, along with the gold necklace, was more than enough.
