Stanley Cups Are Being Recalled Nationwide for a Safety Hazard — Here’s What We Know So Far
Whether you love it or hate it, it’s almost impossible you haven’t heard about Stanley cups and tumblers by now. The viral 40-ounce “Quencher” has become all the rage in recent years, sending people running to Target in a frenzy or waiting in line for hours to get their hands on the latest “Galentine’s” or gold color drop. (And other companies are going all-out on dupes). If you were lucky enough to be able to get your hands on a Stanley, you may want to check the serial number on your cup, as nearly three-million travel mugs were just recalled on December 12.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission recall, defective lids on the Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs can shrink when exposed to heat and pop off the cup, posing a burn hazard. There have been 38 reports of burns worldwide, including two burns in the United States, and 11 of those people affected required medical attention.
The recall specifically applies to double-walled mugs sold in a number of colors at nationwide stores such as Amazon, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Target between June 2016 and December 2024. If you think you may have purchased a defective mug during that time, then you can also check the bottom of your mug for any of these serial numbers: 20-01437, 20-01436, 20-02211, 20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825, 20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957, 20-02034 or 20-02746.
The company also faced a lawsuit earlier this year due to claims that they had failed to adequately disclose the use of lead in some of its water bottles. The company later released a statement clarifying that the vacuum insulation process in some of its products uses an “industry standard process” that requires pellets, “some of which include some lead,” but are covered with a “durable stainless-steel layer, making them inaccessible to consumers.”
If you believe you own a recalled Switchback or Trigger Action travel mug with one of the aforementioned serial numbers, Stanley suggests you immediately stop using the mug and to contact them for a free replacement lid.
