From Town & Country

There's a new medieval fantasy series on the horizon. Netflix is set to premiere Cursed, a series that situates Nimue (also known as the Lady of the Lake) at the center of Arthurian legend, not King Arthur.

Here's what you should know about the show.

It's an adaptation of an illustrated YA novel.

Written by Thomas Wheeler and illustrated by Frank Miller, Cursed is a retelling of the story of King Arthur. Whereas in the regular tale, Arthur retrieves the sword Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake, in this version, it's the Lady who gets the all-powerful weapon.

Wheeler and Miller are also involved in the TV show, with Wheeler as the showrunner, and both serving as executive producers.

"Realizing these characters from page to screen was a unique and thrilling creative challenge," Wheeler told Entertainment Weekly. "I think first and foremost when casting for Cursed, Frank and I were looking for a mythological truth, actors who could bring the emotion and the humanity to legendary characters without losing the sense of elemental magic and epic stakes."

It stars Katherine Langford as Nimue.

Langford is best-known for her role in Netflix's 13 Reasons Why, and also appeared in 2019's hit movie Knives Out. Wheeler described Langford as "equal parts classic hero and sword-swinging badass."

She'll be joined by Devon Terrell as young mercenary named Arthur, Sebastian Armesto as King Uther, and Gustaf Skarsgård as Merlin, among others.

The series will debut this summer.

Netflix has yet to announce an official premiere date, but according to Entertainment Weekly, viewers can expect Cursed to hit the streaming service sometime in the next few months.
