Nikki Lund RTW Spring 2017
Nikki Lund fused inspiration from her ancestral roots in Sweden, her current home of Los Angeles and her future as a mother into a spring collection that offered versatility, comfort and a bit of an edge.
Titled “Monster Pa Manen,” which is translated from Swedish as the phases of the moon, the collection adapted the concept of the progression of time into clothes that a woman needs to take her from work to the pool to dinner.
“It’s the day-to-night lifestyle,” Lund said, wrapping her six-month baby bump in a black minidress, yellow-striped jacket and studded flats, after her runway show at Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, Calif. She’s lived that lifestyle to the hilt. After partnering with rocker Richie Sambora on a fashion label named Nikki Rich, which has since disbanded, the musically inclined designer is prepping to host a fashion competition show called “Queen on 34th,” which begins airing on FUBU TV in January.
Blending her maternal instinct with her design sense, Lund said, “I just felt different. I wanted more comfort. I wanted stretchier material.”
Besides offering stretch, some of the fabrics she tried for the first time also fell into the washable, wearable category. She cut maxidresses out of machine-safe silk chiffon and tailored slim jackets out of stretchy lace. The subdued palette of indigo, sky blue, cream, black, sienna and olive green supported a Bohemian motif as exhibited in a plethora of bandana prints and tie-dye treatments.
Impending motherhood didn’t euthanize her aesthetics to the point where she would plaster storks, bunnies and layers of pink all over her designs. A metallic sequined maxiskirt was topped with a cream jacket punctuated by a couple of black skulls. A black intarsia cardigan paid tribute to Los Angeles with a border that declared the city’s name in white.
While the Empire-waist dresses appeared to provide an easy wardrobe for a mom-to-be, they didn’t come across as very original because they could have been pulled from any Boho-inflected line in L.A. Lund fared better with the drapey jumpsuit that had exaggerated pockets on the side and bomber jackets that were made from novelty fabrics. Her signature item — the military-style band jacket that molds the torso — is a favorite of one celebrity fan who is another glam blonde balancing music and motherhood: Carrie Underwood.
