Olympic athlete Sarah Nurse say she's 'never liked to be put in a box' and that 'hockey is not who I am as a person'

Olympic athlete Sarah Nurse is more than just who she is at the rink. The 30-year-old Canadian hockey player loves lacing up her skates, hitting the ice and working with her teammates, but she also wants people to know there are many sides to her life.

"Although I love hockey and play it, hockey is not who I am as a person," the Hamilton, Ont.-born athlete told Yahoo Canada after recently announcing she's Revlon's first-ever Canadian ambassador. "My love for fashion and beauty has allowed me to connect with all different communities and various people from around the world."

Moreover, Nurse explained how working in those industries has allowed her to take on new opportunities. It has also taught her more about branding and marketing.

"I've never liked to be put in a box and being able to live my life authentically has been so fulfilling. ... I like to let my game on the ice speak for itself and luckily have been able to see success in all different areas of my life," she continued.

A trailblazer in ice hockey

Playing for both the Toronto Sceptres in the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) and the Canadian national women's team, Nurse has quickly become a trailblazer in the sport. She helped Team Canada take home a silver medal at the 2018 Olympics and broke two Olympic records at the 2022 games.

But beyond pure skill on the ice, Nurse — the daughter of a Black father and white mother — has often spoken out about racism in hockey and aimed to represent Black women in the sport. She's also worked with the Black Girl Hockey Club, a nonprofit that advocates for Black women in hockey across North America.

"I take a lot of pride in representing Black women in hockey," Nurse shared. "With fewer Black women in hockey, you naturally have more eyes on you, but I don't think that more eyes on you is a bad thing. Through the years, I've tried to use that as a way to show ... that hockey is a place where you can dress how you want and look like yourself."

How she blends her love for hockey and beauty

Nurse also shared that her new partnership with Revlon "truly feels like a dream." She initially worked with the beauty brand in 2021 and shared she was excited to collaborate with the company again, this time as its first-ever Canadian ColorStay ambassador.

Her love for makeup and beauty is seemingly always present in her life, to the point where she called herself a "true beauty girl on and off the ice." Even during her walk-in to a game, she said she loves having a full "glam look" that she can wear throughout the match.

Nurse said Revlon's ColorStay collection is what she always uses to ensure her makeup look lasts on the ice with "no transfer, no budge, no smudge." On top of using long-wear products and layering her base, she said she's able to make her look last by using both Revlon's ColorStay Blot Setting Powder and ColorStay Setting Spray. "Your look will not move!" she said.

Some of her other favourite makeup products include a bold red lip that she said "really awakens my confidence," and a bronzer that she said "I don't leave the house without." Moreover, Nurse raved about how Revlon's ColorStay Flex Wear Concealer is always in her bag, and that she's been "obsessed" with the brand's ColorStay Full Time Mascara.

"I hope this shows young girls and women that you don't need to be put in one box," she said. "You can be an athlete and love makeup, it really doesn't need to be one or the other. I love that I can be an athlete and still represent the beauty space."
