Moving house comes with inevitable stresses and strains – but when relocating to a new property, we all want the process to flow as seamlessly as possible for a positive start in our new home.

The first day in your new property also goes some way towards setting the tone for your time there, and one way to help you create a seriously zen feeling on moving day is to employ some simple Feng Shui practices to encourage positivity and harmony to flow into your home from day one.

'Feng Shui is based around the idea that an unbroken flow of energy, or "chi", promotes luck and prosperity – this means harmony is the aim when sorting your new home according to Feng Shui rules,' explains Feng Shui expert Inbaal Honigman, in collaboration with Upmove.

3 moving day Feng Shui practices to try

1) There's plenty you can do when it comes to utilising common Feng Shui practices on moving day, starting with leaving all negativity at the door.

'Each member of the household should make an effort to walk into the property for the first time in a positive mood,' says Inbaal. 'Do your best not to argue on the day, as stressful as it may be, and try to bring in your best energy to your new home.'

2) One of the biggest ways to bring harmony into your home on moving day is to carry something meaningful through the door with you.

'Carry into the house everything that you want to experience while you live there,' says Inbaal. 'Each person should come in with meaningful items in their hands, for example, your favourite lamp, a dish or a toy; whatever is precious to the person.'

If you can't think of anything especially meaningful to you, a Feng Shui tradition for encouraging financial prosperity in your new home (something we're all happy to boost) is to carry a bowl of rice.

Inbaal explains: 'Carry this into the house, leaving it only half full so that there's room for more wealth to come in. Then, sprinkle rice inside and outside the house too, to encourage prosperity.'c

3) You can continue to embrace and inspire good Feng Shui as you start unpacking in your new home, but the order in which you unpack your items can have a huge impact on creating a balanced and harmonious environment, says Inbaal.

'Tempting as it is to unpack furniture and white goods first, in Feng Shui, your home will feel more aligned if you unpack some personal items first; for example, any framed photos or a potted plant,' she says. 'Bring each item in and focus on the happiness that it will bring you in your new abode.'

And there's more – there's a specific order in which you should do this too. 'Go clockwise, one room at a time, and only once you've acquainted yourself with each room by unpacking personal belongings, can you start bringing in your furniture and unpacking the rest of your boxes,' she advises.
