Popular clifftop restaurant in Pismo Beach closing after 37 years
After more than 37 years serving the Central Coast off of Highway 101, a San Luis Obispo County seafood staple is closing its doors.
The Spyglass Inn Restaurant, which leases its space from the titular Spyglass Inn Hotel, will hold its last dinner service on Sunday, according to an employee of the hotel working the front desk who asked not to be identified.
Longtime customers Jack Harris, Carol Beran and Laurie and Edward Sweeny said they stopped in at the restaurant Thursday afternoon for a last meal at an old favorite.
“Had they not even been closing, we would have come,” Beran told The Tribune.
After being a regular diner for more than 30 years, Harris said it’ll be hard to let go of the Shell Beach fixture after ownership decided not to renew the restaurant’s lease with the hotel.
“The people that work here, I think they’re going to miss it, and they had a very loyal customer base,” Harris said.
Laurie Sweeny added: “It’s extraordinarily busy for a restaurant that’s about to close, and the food is as fresh as it was the day they opened.”
Harris said he’ll miss the restaurant’s exemplary service and one-of-a-kind views.
“Had this place been in Southern California, it would be mobbed,” Harris said. “It is so unique that you see this unbelievable portion of our California coast — you don’t see any humans out there.”
Restaurant management declined Tribune requests to comment on the closure.
