Prince Harry Asked for Permission from Meghan Markle’s Mom Before He Proposed

Prince Harry is a traditionalist at heart.

The royal, who announced his engagement to Meghan Markle on Monday, asked for her mother, Doria Ragland’s permission before popping the question, a source tells PEOPLE.

Markle has been outspoken about her love and admiration for her mother in the past, so it’s no surprise that Harry would seek out Ragland’s blessing before asking Markle to marry him. In an August 2017 article for Glamour, Markle talked about the impact her mother had on her, calling Ragland her “best friend.”
