Princess Beatrice’s New Baby’s Blanket Has a Secret Royal Significance

Earlier this week, Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi announced the birth of their second daughter: Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi.
“We welcomed Baby Athena into our lives last week. She is tiny and absolutely perfect. We are all (including Wolfie and Sienna) already completely besotted with her. Our hearts are overflowing with love for you, baby Athena,” Edo wrote on Instagram, with a photograph he took of his new daughter. Athena's grandmother Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, posted, “Overflowing with love and joy to be able to welcome Athena Elizabeth Rose into the world. She is already so adored and I’m incredibly blessed to be a Granny once again. So proud of Edo, Beatrice and the rest of my little 5-a-side team!”
In the photo the royals shared of Athena, who is now 11th in line for the British throne, the newborn was wrapped in a pink cashmere blanket from Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece’s eponymous brand. The blanket, from the “angel wing” collection, is one of Marie-Chantal’s favorite pieces, she told Tatler.

The blanket, made of 100% cashmere, could be viewed as a meaningful nod to Princess Beatrice’s Greek heritage; her grandfather, Prince Philip (and Athena's great-grandfather), belonged to the Greek royal family. Princess Marie-Chantal is married to Philip’s nephew, Crown Prince Pavlos. (Notably, Athena’s name is also a nod to the Greek goddess of wisdom.)
