The Princess of Wales took a style cue from Princess Diana during her latest public appearance on Thursday.

As she begins to slowly return to royal duties after announcing that she’s in remission from cancer, Kate paid a visit to Tŷ Hafan, the first children’s hospice built in Wales. The organisation has a special connection to Kate’s late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, who supported the establishment of Tŷ Hafan (“Haven House” in Welsh) and served as the hospice’s patron until her death in 1997 (the organisation spent 11 years in the fundraising stage, and opened its doors officially in 1999). King Charles III took over the patronage after Diana’s death but has now passed on the role to Kate.

“We are deeply honoured that Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales has become Patron of Tŷ Hafan and it was an absolute pleasure to welcome Her Royal Highness to our hospice for the first time today,” Tŷ Hafan’s chief executive, Irfon Rees, said in a press release. “As our Patron, Her Royal Highness will be an inspiration for children with life-shortening conditions and their families, our dedicated staff and volunteers, and everyone who so generously supports us.”

Rees added, “No parent ever imagines that their child’s life will be short. Sadly this is the reality facing thousands of families in Wales. We can’t stop this happening, but together we can make sure that no one lives their child’s short life alone.”

For her visit, Kate seemed to nod to Diana by wearing a black-and-white-houndstooth midi dress by Zara, with details like billowing bishop sleeves, a pussy bow, and a cinched waist. Houndstooth was favoured by Diana, with the pattern making up some of her most memorable looks ever. Kate completed her look with a cream long wool coat, gold earrings from Spells of Love, and black patent-leather pumps with a block heel from Russell & Bromley.

At Tŷ Hafan, Kate toured rooms and facilities and played with children currently being cared for by the hospice. She also met with bereaved families who are still being supported by the Tŷ Hafan community.
