The reason why Cambridge kids won't join Wills and Kate at special event
While Prince William and Kate Middleton gear up for an evening of glitz and glamour at tonight's Royal Variety Performance, the Cambridge children will be noticeably missing from the festivities – for a very good reason.
As it turns out, eight-year-old Prince George, six-year-old Princess Charlotte and three-year-old Prince Louis will get an early night at home tonight, unlike their parents who'll be meeting the likes of Alan Carr and Ed Sheeran at the Royal Albert Hall in London. But why?
According to singer Petula Clark (who met the Duchess of Cambridge at the event in 2019), it's all to do with the kids' bedtime routine. Apparently, Kate revealed the kids had been really excited about where their parents were heading and, when asked why they couldn't attend, she said: "Not on a school night!" [via OK!].
Luckily, the Cambridge children will be able to catch up on all the fun they missed out on when the Royal Variety Performance airs on TV in December. Until then, we're sure their parents will have plenty of stories to tell them about the star-studded event.
The Royal Variety Performance is held annually to support the Royal Variety Charity, which raises money to "assist those who've worked professionally in the entertainment industry and are in need of help." Her Majesty the Queen is a patron of the charity, and this year marks a century of the reigning monarch being patron – with her grandfather King George V first taking on the role in 1921.
Due to her busy schedule, the Queen has not attended the Royal Variety Performance since 2012, and given her recent health scare (and a back injury that forced her to pull out of Sunday's Remembrance Service at the last minute), she wont be in attendance this evening either. In her place, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will represent the Royal Family, with other members of the family doing so over the years too, including Prince Charles, Camilla Parker-Bowles, Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and Princess Anne.
Despite missing this year's event, Her Majesty has still attended the Royal Variety Performance more times than any other Royal. According to the Royal Variety Charity's website, the 95-year-old has attended the event 39 times throughout her patronage, with her late husband Prince Philip not far behind on 29. Prince Charles has attended a total of 16 times.
